USS JEFFERSON CITY SUBMARINE COMMITTEE
OCTOBER 9, 2008
Committee Members in attendance: George Bruss, Edmond Irwin, Herman Smith,
Anita Randolph, and John O’Connell
Guests: Steve Schlueter, City Finance Director
Call to order: Ed Irwin
Old Business: None
New Business: The upcoming visit of the crewmembers was the topic of discussion. The
visit is scheduled for October 17th through October 21st. Eight crewmembers will be
arriving, The Captain, a Junior Officer, the C.O.B., and the Yeoman Chief, and four
enlisted members. Funding for the trip was discussed briefly and indicated that the trip
arrangements have been paid. Melody Green provided the attendees with the crew visit
itinerary. She also was attempting to find lodging for four of the crew and was hoping to
house them near her area to simplify transportation issues. She has already secured
housing for four of the crewmembers. Arrangements were discussed about visiting
Herman Smith’s basement museum and were set up for Saturday afternoon between 2:30
and 3:00 PM after the downtown Harvest Fest charity event. According to Ed Irwin,
details for the BBQ scheduled for Saturday evening were being handled by Sam
Bushman. The trip over to Herman on Sunday for the Octoberfest was talked about
briefly and suggested that the drinking by the crew be kept to a minimum. Steve
Schlueter spoke about the funds that the committee has in reserve. He indicated that on
average the committee has spent about $2200.00 per year and that there was about
$15,000.00 still in the account. At that rate the fund would be depleted in seven years
and additional funding would need to be addressed at some point. The life expectancy of
the boat is 40 years so the reserve fund will not cover that time adequately.
Next Meeting: No date set for the next meeting.
Adjournment: Herman Smith (first), John O’Connell (second).
