APRIL16, 2009
Committee Members in attendance: George Bruss, Chairman, Ed Irwin, Vice
Chairman, Herman Smith, Senior Member, and John O’Connell, Secretary.
Guests: Steve Schlueter, City Finance Director
Call to Order: Ed Irwin called the meeting to order at 5:00 PM
Roll Call: All members were present. However, the City Counsel Representative: Anita
Randolph was not present. She had lost her recent bid for election to the counsel and a
replacement has not yet been designated by the Mayor’s office.
Motion: Steve Schlueter presented a motion to accept the meeting notes from the
October 9, 2008 meeting. Motion accepted and passed the meeting notes will be placed
in record.
Finance Report: Steve Schlueter delivered a detailed finance report on the condition of
the USS JC Submarine Trust. In summary, the account holding is $17,469.00, the
account revenue is lower due to the drop in interest rates and with a projected expenditure
of $2000.00 for this year there will be a short fall of $1300.00 that will have to be drawn
from the account. Assuming the projected income and expenditures the account has a
projected value of $16,169.00 at the end of this fiscal year. The projected $2000.00
expenditure is for the returning crew members expenses during the planned visit in
August 2009. Some discussion was address about the probable need for future fund
raising due to the extend life expectance of the boat from 20 to 30 years. However, that
subject was put off for a future time.
Old Business: None
New Business: Ed Irwin asked about the By-Laws and how they address the selection of
applications to becoming a member of the Submarine Committee. Steve Schlueter was
uncertain of the qualification as addressed in the by-laws and he suggested obtaining a
copy of the By-Laws from the Mayor’s office.
The most pressing issue for the committee is the upcoming Submarine Ball and visit of
the crew from the USS Jefferson City and coordinating that with the fund raising by the
Commissioning Committee for the USS Missouri. This event is being scheduled for
August 21 & 22 of this year. Ed Irwin indicated that he had spoke with Melody Green
about her assistance in coordinating the event for the crew of the USS Jefferson City.
Also, Ed indicated that he had attempted to contact the USS Jefferson City but had
received no response. He indicated that he would be responsible for contacting the boat
and assuring that they would be available to attend the events scheduled for August 21 &
22.
Ed Irwin indicated that he had spoke with Sam Bushman, who is the local spokesman and
coordinator for the USS Missouri Commissioning Committee. According to Ed, Sam has
obtained commitment from the local Marine Corp League to provide a BBQ Friday
evening, August 21, at Riverside Park for Attendee’s from the USS Jefferson City and
USS Missouri crews and Commissioning Committee and other attendee’s. The local
Navy League members would assist with the serving of food at the BBQ.
The Submarine Ball scheduled for Saturday, August 22, will be at the Capitol Plaza
Hotel. This event is a fund raiser for the Commissioning Committee of the USS
Missouri. It is expected to be a black tie optional event with a donation of $75.00 per
person. The donation will include a presentation by Vice Admiral Jay Donnelly, dinner,
and entertainment by the Capitol Kicks band.
Sam Bushman has also made arrangements for Vice Admiral Donnelly to give a
presentation to all attendee’s Saturday afternoon. This will be delivered from the floor of
the House of Representatives at the Missouri State Capitol. Sam also has spoke with the
Governor’s office and they may offer some involvement.
George Bruss indicated that he was going to invite crew members from the USS Topeka
and the USS Columbia too participate in both events. It was agreed that an additional
meeting should be set up so that Sam Bushman could attend and further information and
plans about the Submarine Ball and Crew visits could be worked out. Tentatively the
next meeting was set for sometime in the later part of June when all concerned could
attend.
Adjournment: John O’Connell (first), George Bruss (second).
