HomeMy Public PortalAbout20100302minutesUSS JEFFESRON CITY SUBMARINE COMMITTEE MARCH 2, 2010 Call to Order; At 5:00 PM the meeting was called to order by George Bruss, Chairman. Roll Call; In attendance are George Bruss, Chairman, Ed Irwin, Vice Chairman, Herman Smith, Senior Member, John O'Connell, Secretary, and Mike Ryno, New Member. Also in attendance, Steve Schlueter, City Finance Director. Rich Koon, Council Representative, was absent due to another meeting. The new member, Mike Ryno, introduced himself too the Committee and indicated that he is the Skipper of the local Navy Club Ship 5. Motion; Steve Schlueter presented the members with a copy of the updated and changed By- Laws pertaining to the rules of the Committee and a copy of the previous meeting minutes. All were given time to review the information. Ed Irwin made a motion to accept the minutes of the previous meeting that was seconded by John O'Connell and approved by the Committee. Nomination for Vacant Committee Seats; Ed Irwin indicated that he had spoke with Melody Green and she has declined the offer to serve on the Committee. Also, Herman Smith indicated that he would like to retire from the Committee for health reasons but will remain an Honorary Member for life. Ed Irwin and George Bruss indicated that they had received interest from two individuals, Marti Thruston and Dick Kauffman, concerning membership on the Committee. Marty Thruston, who lives in Brazito, has a son on the USS Missouri. Dick Kauffman, who lives at St. Martins, is a Submarine Veteran. Steve Schlueter stated that the applicant should fill out and return their applications quickly so their names can be submitted for consideration in a timely manner. The next Committee meeting has been set for April 5, 2010 so that the new applicants for membership can be submitted to the council for approval. Fund Raising Activities; The fund raising issue has become more concerning as the DOD has decided to extend the life of these Submarines from twenty years to thirty years. At the present rate of spending for crew visits the present trust fund will not support this activity through the life of the ship. John O'Connell was contacted by Sam Bushman who advised that he had been told by Hal Dulle, of the Marine Corp League, of their intent to sponsor a BBQ fund raiser for the benefit of the USS Jefferson City Submarine trust fund. They have scheduled the event for Saturday May 8, 2010 to be held at Schulte's IGA parking lot. Also, Sam Bushman indicated that the Marine Corp League may be willing to do an additional fund raiser BBQ during the crew visit this coming fall. Discussion on Expiration of 2010 Terms; Ed Irwin indicated his intent to not renew his membership on the Committee effective the 1st of July 2010. He did state he would assist with the upcoming crew visit. Old Business; None New Business; The upcoming crew visit was brought up but no decisions could be made as the ship is out on deployment until the end of March or first of April. Ed Irwin indicated he would contact the Captain when he returns to port. Adjournment; At 5:30 PM Ed Irwin made a motion to adjourn and it was seconded by Mike Ryno. The motion carried and the meeting was adjourned.
