HomeMy Public PortalAbout20110907minutesUSS JEFFERSON CITY SUBMARINE COMMITTEE SEPTEMBER 7, 2011 Minutes Call to Order: At 5:15 PM the meeting was called to order by the Chairperson, Melody Green. Roll Call: Roll call was taken by the Secretary and those present were Chairperson, Melody Green, Secretary, John O'Connell, Steve Schlueter, Staff Liaison, Mike Ryno, Mark Aulbur, and Marti Thruston. Also, present was Ms. Madeleine Leroux reporter for the News Tribune. Election of Officers: Chairperson, Melody Green Stated that the two officer positions that were open are Vice Chairman and Crew Visit Coordinator. She asked if there were any volunteers for those positions and after a brief debate Mike Ryno volunteered for the Vice Chair position and Marti Thruston for the Crew Visit Coordinator. Melody Green then made a motion to nominate Mike Ryno to the Vice Chair position and it was seconded by Mark Aulbur and the committee unanimously approved the motion. Then Melody Green again made a motion to nominated Marti Thruston as Crew Visit Coordinator. The motion was seconded by Mark Aulbur and the committee unanimously approved the motion. Approval of May 24, 2011 Minutes: The Committee members were given time to review the minutes from the May 24th meeting A motion was made by Mark Aulbur to approve the minutes and it was seconded by Mike Ryno. The full Committee approve the motion. Budget Report from Steve Schlueter, Finance Director: Steve Schlueter gave a printed copy of what is headlined, 2011-2012 Budget Summary- USS JC Submarine Trust, to each member. He then reported more detailed information from a different form that included more specific information of income and expenses from the "Trust Fund" for the 2011 year. At the end of the presentation Steve said that the amount available in the Trust as of November 1, 2011 would be $18,072.00. Fund raiser information discussion: Melody Green presented information she had received from Melody Dickson, wife of the USS Jefferson City Captain. The wives auxiliary club is sponsoring a fund raiser to provide Christmas gifts for the crew members while they are deployed through this Christmas. The club is selling "Reminder Bands". They are an elastic band red in color and have the name of the ship imbedded on it and they are selling them for $2.00 each. After some discussion Marti Thruston made a motion that the committee purchase 50 men's 50 women's, 22 children's, the motion was seconded by Mike Ryno and the Committee approved the motion. Steve Schlueter advised Melody Green to submit a request for the funding from the Trust Fund and that amount would be reimbursed to the Trust Fund after the sale of the Reminder Bands to the public was completed. Melody also discussed the possibility of another fund raiser BBQ using Hal Dulle's Patriot group at Schulte's parking lot. There was some concern from Hal Dulle that the turn-out of help from the Submarine Committee for the last BBQ was very low. Melody felt that in part that was because it was held on Saturday before Mother's Day. She was hoping to find another weekend that might be available. Also, Mike Ryno suggested that Hy-Vee might be an alternate location. Melody said that she would check with Hal Dulle and see what is possible. Updated Contact information: Melody Green provided everyone with a new contact information sheet to be filled out and returned for her records. This should help in notifying members of meeting times and any other important information. USS Jefferson City VIP trip to the Boat: Melody was hoping to coordinate with the Governor's office and other interested political types from the community and members of the Submarine Committee a VIP trip to San Diego and a day trip on the USS Jefferson City during the Spring of 2012. She is waiting to hear back from Commander Dickson, Commanding Officer of the Submarine. The expenses for the trip would be out of pocket for all parties. Next Crew Visit: Since the Boat is on a long term deployment a 2011 visit was not an option. The next possible time for another crew visit will be the fall of 2012. Old Business: There was no Old Business items for discussion. New Business: Steve Schlueter stated that the Mayor has selected the next person to fill the vacancy on the Committee and that person is Irwin Turner, of Jefferson City. Steve had no further information about this person. The next Committee meeting was set for September 27, 2012 at 5:15 PM. Adjournment: At about 6:00 PM Mark Aulbur made a motion to adjourn and that motion was seconded by Marti Thruston. The motion carried and the meeting adjourned. *As a follow up to the article that ran in the News Tribune on Thursday morning by Madeleine Leroux, Committee to sell "Reminder Bands", Melody Green emailed all members asking for a consensus to increase the number of bands ordered. She suggested increasing the order from 50 men's and 50 women's to 100 of each and keeping the 22 children.
