HomeMy Public PortalAbout20120912minutesUSS JEFFERSON CITY SUBMARINE COMMITTEE SEPTEMBER 12, 2012 MINUTES Call to Order: At 5:15 PM the meeting was called to order by Chairperson, Melody Green. Roll Call: Roll call was taken by the Secretary, John O'Connell. Those present are Chairperson, Melody Green, Secretary, John O'Connell, Visit Co-coordinator, Marti Thruston, and new member, Hal Dulle. Approval of June 12, 2012 meeting minutes: The minutes from the previous meeting were provided to those present. They were read and reviewed by all. Melody Green, made a motion to approve the meeting minutes as presented, that motion was seconded by Hal Dulle. Planning for the Submarine Crew Visit, and 20th Anniversary of the Commissioning Celebration: Marti Thruston presented to the members a well detailed itinerary of the upcoming crew visit schedule that she has developed. Also, she presented a proposal to have the 20th celebration at the Capital Ritz Hall. She has a commitment from the owner to provide tables, table cloths and napkins for $4.50 per person. Additionally a cash Bar would be offered. Marti has also contacted Danny Farmer to provide the catering of a buffet dinner for the celebration dinner. At this time no price was agreed to for the catering. Cash bar would be available from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, dinner to be served at 7:00 PM. Marti asked for a motion from the committee to accept the proposal of using the Capital Ritz for the event location and Danny Farmer to provide the catering. Hal Dulle made the motion and it was seconded by John O'Connell. The motion was carried by the Committee. Marti Thruston asked for discussion about some pending opportunities for the crew members during the visit. The Captain and the LTJG, will arrive on Wednesday October 17th they will be attending an ROTC event at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. That event is scheduled for 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM, Hal Dulle volunteered to accompany the group and provide transportation if necessary. The rest of the Crew will arrive Thursday October 18th and go directly to the Elks Club for a meeting and dinner. The possible tour of Unilever was still up in the air either for Friday the 19th or Monday the 22nd at 2:00 PM. If that doesn't work out it was suggested that may be a substitute could be a tour of Scholastic. Hal also suggested that they work in a visit to Lewis & Clark middle school on Friday or Monday. He would make the arrangements with the principal. Hal also suggested that on Monday lunch could be arraigned at another Rotary meeting and he would take care of the details. Marti Thurston pointed out that the Sunday Ghost tour of the Missouri State Prison has a cost of $25.00 per person without exception. It was discussed that the committee could pay for the Crew Members admission. Melody Green said that she and Jerry were going to The Ram's game in St. Louis and she was planning to invite the Captain. It was pointed out that there is no City Council meeting on Monday the 22nd. So it was discussed that this would be an opportunity to take the crew for dinner at the American Legion or a visit to the VFW, or if that doesn't work out group dinner at Madison's or Bones. Melody and Marti discussed the different options for the invitations for the 20th Anniversary Dinner and who would take charge of the mailing and printing. Melody suggested that a possible cap of 100 invitees for the Anniversary Dinner event. A cost for attendees has not been determined but it was thought that it could also have an amount included to act as a fund raiser for the trust fund. She did suggest that the committee pay for the Mayor, Eric Struemph and Former Mayor, Louise Gardner dinner tickets. Melody also indicated she would ask former Mayor, Louise Gartner if the Committee could borrow the model of the USS Jefferson City Submarine, that she has, for display during the Anniversary dinner. Melody went on to say that she would contact Herman Smith's wife and ask to borrow some of his Submarine memorabilia for display at the dinner event. Old Business: None New Business: Melody Green made a motion to pay for the 20th Anniversary dinner event out of the yearly allotted crew visit money since the Navy is now paying for the crew members flights to and from Missouri. Hal Dulle seconded the motion and it was approved by the Committee. Hal and Melody were going to check on media and newspaper coverage for the Crew visit and some of the special events. It also was suggest to run a notification add for the 20th Anniversary event in the local News Tribune. Next Meeting Date: It was decided that a follow up meeting would be necessary on September 19th at 5:15 PM. Adjournment: At 5:50 PM Melody made a motion to adjourn and it was seconded by Marti Thruston and so the meeting was adjourned.
