EXPAND THE NEW JERSEY DEFINITION OF VETERAN
WHEREAS, appropriate recognition of service and sacrifice to country should be
afforded equally to all veterans residing in New Jersey; and,
WHEREAS, since the Vietnam War, the New Jersey Legislature has only granted
veterans' status to those veterans who served 14 days or more in a combat theater of
operation; and,
WHEREAS, all veterans who served during the Vietnam War and before, regardless
of location, where granted veterans' status; and,
WHEREAS, legislation [A847 & A887 & S310] has been introduced and is being
acted on in the legislature that will broaden eligibility for certain veterans' benefits
by eliminating the requirement that a veteran serve during specific dates or in
specific locations; and
WHEREAS, a vet is a vet regardless of where they serve; and
WHEREAS, over 15 major veterans' organizations and military associations have
issued a joint statement announcing their united position for legislation {A847 &
A887 & S310} that would expand the qualifications that determine eligibility for
veterans' status in New Jersey; and,
WHEREAS, all veterans who have taken up the profession of arms and swore to
protect this nation deserve this recognition; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Borough of Carteret, of Middlesex County calls upon
the New ~ersey Legislature and the Governor to make veterans a priority by
approving legislation [A847 or A887 or S310] that would treat all veterans with the
same measure of fairness; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a duly authenticated copy of this resolution
be transmitted to Senator Joseph Vitale, Assemblyman John S. Wisniewski,
Assemblywoman Arline M. Friscia, the Speaker of the New Jersey General
Assembly, Co-President of the New Jersey Senate and the Govemor.
