HomeMy Public PortalAbout001-1985-ADOPTING A POICY OF NONDISCRIMINATION ON THE BASIS OF HANDICAPPED STATUS AND AMENDING SEC 35.10 OF THE CODE TO REFLECT THAT POLICYORDINANCE NO. 1-1985 AN ORDINANCE ADOPTING A POLICY OF NONDISCRIMINATION ON THE BASIS OF HANDICAPPED STATUS AND AMENDING SECTION 35.10 OF THE CITY CODE TO REFLECT THAT POLICY WHEREAS, in order to continue to receive federal funds, it is necessary to establish a formal policy of nondiscrimination on the basis of handicapped; and WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Common Council to recognize the contributions of handicapped persons as an integral part of the community; and WHEREAS, it is desirable for the City of Richmond to make its public activities available to handicapped persons; NOW THEREFORE BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RICHMOND, WAYNE COUNTY , INDIANA that: Section 35.10 (a) and (b) of the Richmond City Code be amended as follows: A. It is the policy of the city to provide equal employment opportunity to all persons without regard to their race, creed, color, sex, or national origin, and to promote the full realization of equal employment opportunity through a positive and continuing program. The city shall enact policies which reflect compliance to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Age Discrimination Employment Act of 1967, The Equal Pay For Equal Work Act, and Executive Orders 4141 and 11246, which eliminate any and all restrictions, if any, based on race, color, religion, sex, age, or national origin with respect to recruiting, hiring, training, compensation, overtime, job classifications and assignments,working conditions, promotions, transfers,employee treatment, and any other aspects of employment. The City of Richmond, including its departments, boards districts and agencies, does not discriminate on the basis of handicapped status in the admission or access to, or treatment or employment in, its programs or activities. The City Compliance officer has been designated by the Board of Public Works and Safety to coordinate compliance with the nondiscrimination requirements contained in any federal agency regulations. B. The City will assure that applicants are recruited and hired and that employees are treated during employment without regard to race, creed, religion, sex, color, national origin, age or handicapped status. The city shall not discriminate against the handicapped and shall afford to the handicapped, as to all of its citizens, equal opportunity to participate in employment with the city and to enjoy the full benefits of equal employment as is insured to all employees of the city. And by adding paragraph (E) to Section 35.10 of the City Code to provide as follows: E. The City of Richmond, including its departments, boards, districts, and agencies does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age and handicapped status in the provision of services.
