A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COMMISSION OF THE TOWN OF GULF
STREAM, FLORIDA URGING THE GOVERNOR OF FLORIDA, THE FLORIDA
LEGISLATURE AND THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS TO
PREVENT THE CLOSURE OF GLADES CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTE IN THE
CITY OF BELLE GLADE, FLORIDA; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE; AND
FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
WHEREAS, the Town Commission of the Town of Gulf Stream, Florida has become aware
of the proposed closure of the Glades Correctional Institute in the very near future; and
WHEREAS, Glades Correctional Institute has been a major employer in the Glades Region,
a designated Rural Area of Critical Economic Concern, since 1932; and
WHEREAS, the FY 2012 State of Florida budget does not contain appropriations large
enough to maintain operations at the facility; and
WHEREAS, Glades Correctional Institute is not included on the Region 4 Request for
Proposal list for privatization; and
WHEREAS, the economic impact of such closure is estimated at 587 direct and indirect jobs
lost, $29 million dollars in lost wages, and $38.1 million dollars in gross domestic product losses to
the region; and
WHEREAS, the Glades Region is currently experiencing an unemployment rate near 40% in
some locations; and
WHEREAS, the jobs that would be lost as a result of such closure are jobs that are generally
higher paying jobs with benefits, an uncommon job in an area of predominately agricultural jobs; and
WHEREAS, the Town Commission of the Town of Gulf Stream, Florida believes that the
current proposal for closure of the Glades Correctional Institute is not in the best interests of the
citizens of the State of Florida.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE TOWN COMMISSION OF THE TOWN OF
GULF STREAM, FLORIDA, THAT:
Section 1. The Town Commission of the Town of Gulf Stream, Florida hereby requests
the Governor, in partnership with the Florida Department of Corrections and the Florida Legislature,
to continue the operation of the Glades Correctional Institute.
Section 2. The Town Commission of the Town of Gulf Stream, Florida hereby requests
that this resolution be sent directly to the Governor of Florida, the Secretary of the Florida
Department of Corrections, the Mayors of the City of Pahokee, the City of South Bay, the City of
Belle Glade and the members of the Palm Beach County Legislative Delegation.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption by the Town
Commission of the Town of Gulf Stream, Florida.
