Train Derailment/Crude Oil Spill
On 06/30/17 at 6:54 PM the Plainfield Police Department and Plainfield Fire Protection District
responded to a possible train derailment just south of 143`d Street crossing. Upon arrival, officers
confirmed that a train had in fact derailed and was leaking crude oil. Units immediately began closing
roadways and coordinating emergency responses from additional fire and emergency management
agencies.
The Fire Protection agencies immediately began containment efforts regarding potential fire
and also to keep the oil from reaching the DuPage River. Although local businesses in the immediate
area were evacuated, the incident so far has not required any residential evacuation and there are no
reported injuries.
Along with the fire and emergency management agencies, representatives from Com Ed,
Canadian National, Hulchers (contractor used by CN) and the U.S. Department of Transportation are
on scene. Several other State and Federal agencies have been notified and are en route.
Several roadways including 143`d Street, Naperville/Plainfield Road, Route 126 (Main Street)
Center Street, Eastern Avenue and Lockport Street are currently closed and will likely remain closed
for a significant amount of time.
An incident command post has been established and efforts to continue containment and
clean up are ongoing. Periodic updates on this incident will be made available as the situation
progresses.
