Train Derailment/Crude Oil Spill - Update
As of 9:35am, with the exception of Riverwalk Court, where emergency personnel and
various other agencies are stationed, all roadways within the Village of Plainfield have been
re -opened.
Residents are in no immediate danger as a result of the crude oil spill, which has been
contained. There have been no reports of injuries as a result of the incident.
With the assistance of Hulcher Services, Canadian National Railway is facilitating the
mitigation efforts, which are expected to last several days. According to the Environmental
Protection Agency, who is also on scene, there are no reports of the crude oil entering any
navigable waters around the location of the oil spill.
All businesses on 143rd Street, between Van Dyke Road and Route 59, have been
authorized to resume business operations. Businesses on Riverwalk Court remained closed
and are expected to remain closed for the next day or two,
The cause of the incident remains under investigation and is being handled by the
Federal Railroad Administration.
The Plainfield Police Department is asking individuals to avoid the immediate area of
the oil spill to allow the appropriate personnel to handle the incident safely.
