Tybee Island, Georgia
May 3, 1978
A special called meeting of the Tybee Island City Council was held on
May 3, 1978 at 8:00 p.m. for the purpose of receiving the Certified Election
Returns of the Tybee Island General Municipal Election held on Monday, May 1,
1978 from Judge Robert Cook, who acted as Municipal Superintendent for this
election; and to adopt the necessary Resolution so that official notation thereof
of these results may be made in the records of the City of Tybee Island.
Mayor M. J. Counihan presided and the following members of Council
were present: William C. Fleetwood, John J. Owen, Edward Jung, Karen Losey,
Jerome W. Bettencourt and Nick C. Alexander. The City Attorney, W. Lance Smith,
III, and the City Administrator, Danny C. Johnson were also present.
The City Attorney read the Certified Results of the election. These
. results read as follows:

The City Attorney then read the following Resolution so that these
results could be made a part of the official record:
RESOLUTION
Following the reading of the Resolution, a motion was made that the
Resolution be adopted. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

WHEREAS, the Election Superintendent and Managers duly named by a
resolution passed by the Mayor and Council of the City of Tybee Island, Georgia,
in Council duly assembled on the 8th day of March, 1978 and the 12th day of
April, 1978, to conduct the election just concluded and held on the 1st day of
May, 1978 at Tybee Island, Georgia, for the purpose of electing a Mayor and six
Councilmen to hold office until the first Monday in July, 1980, or until their
successors have been duly elected and qualified, have made the consolidated
returns and results of such election by resolution to the Mayor and Councilmen
calling said election, which return consolidation was done in the presence of
and together with the Election Superintendent and several managers; and
WHEREAS, it appears that M. J. Counihan received the highest number
of votes for the office of Mayor of the City of Tybee Island, Georgia; and
WHEREAS, Nick Alexander, Jerome W. Bettencourt, William C. Fleetwood,
Edward Jung, Karen Young Losey, and John J. Owen, Jr. received the highest
number of votes for councilmen of the City of Tybee Island, Georgia.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Councilmen of Tybee
Island, Georgia, in council duly assembled and it is hereby resolved by the
authority of the same, that the results of said election be, and the same are,
hereby declared as electing:
M. J. Counihan as Mayor
Nick Alexander as Councilman
Jerome W. Bettencourt as Councilman
William C. Fleetwood as Councilman
Edward Jung :as Councilman
Karen Young Losey as Councilman
John J. Owen, Jr. as Councilman
of the City of Tybee Island, to hold office until the first Monday in July, 1980,
or until their successors are elected and duly qualified; said results appearing
from the returns of the election superintendent and said election managers, which .
said returns are hereby adopted by the Mayor and Councilmen of the City of Tybee
Island, and officially made a part of this resolution and the minutes of said
Council meeting.
