STATE OF THE CITY REMARKS
Presented this Valentine's Day
February 14, 1995
Greencastle, Indiana became a city in 1819. However, 1822 is the vear most
historians recognize as the beginning of Greencastle. Greencastle's history is rich
with Irish shamrocks, Eli Lilly's first drug store and Deoauw University. Our city's
brilliant past is a reflection of its shining promise.
Greencastle is a community of families and neighborhoods. Greencastle is a
city of vision and resilience, but Greencastle can only reach its potential with
commitment, dedication and an affirmation to our children's future. The
accomplishments of this administration have been significant: the new park pool, 52
streets paved, a full -time engineer, an animal control officer, Veterans Memorial
Highway, new subdivisions, Building Commissioner, water and sewer
improvements, curbside recycling, All- America Citv Award. All while lowering the
tax rate. Our tremendous success is because people make a difference in our home
town.
Teamwork, unselfishness, honesty and partnership are the ingredients of our
success. Each member of this administration_ from the Department Heads to the Citv
Council, Plan Commission to the Clean City Committee, have worked hard for our
city and its future. Our city employees ar well- trained and serve with pride.
City government is at its very best when citizen involvement precedes
community decisions. Let us todav rededicate ourselves to making Greencastle the
best small city in Indiana, maybe even the vtidwest. This dream is achievable
because we are a community not simply a city.
