HomeMy Public PortalAbout2019_11_26_R173 Bloomberg Asphalt Art Grant OpportunityThe Town of Leesburg, Virginia PRESENTED: RESOLUTION NO. 2019-173 ADOPTED: November 26, 2019 November 26, 2019 A RESOLUTION: AUTHORIZATION TO APPLY FOR A BLOOMBERG PHILANTHROPIES ASPHALT ART GRANT WHEREAS, the Town Council is committed to supporting performing and visual arts activities within the Town of Leesburg and the independent arts organizations that sponsor these activities; and WHEREAS, the Bloomberg Philanthropies launched its Asphalt Art Initiative and will provide up to $25,000 in competitive grants to small and medium size U.S. communities to fund visual art interventions on roadways, pedestrian spaces, and public infrastructures; and WHEREAS, the goals of the program are to improve street and pedestrian safety, revitalize and beautify underutilized public spaces, and promote collaboration and civic engagement in local communities; and WHEREAS, the lead applicant must be a government agency; and WHEREAS, the Department of Public Works and Capital Projects would be the lead for this application; and WHEREAS, the fiscal agent receiving the grant funds must be a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit; and WHEREAS, the Friends of Leesburg Public Arts has agreed to be that fiscal agent; and WHEREAS, the Leesburg Commission on Public Art recommends that the Town apply for this grant for providing asphalt art at the Washington and Old Dominion Trail crossings at South King Street, Harrison Street SE and Catoctin Circle SW. -2- A RESOLUTION: AUTHORIZATION TO APPLY FOR A BLOOMBERG PHILANTHROPIES ASPHALT ART GRANT THEREFORE, RESOLVED, by the Council of the Town of Leesburg in Virginia as follows: SECTION I. The Town Council authorizes staff to submit an application for the Bloomberg Philanthropies Asphalt Art Initiative for up to $25,000 for art at up to three crosswalks at the Washington and Old Dominion Trail crossings at South King Street, Harrison Street SE and Catoctin Circle SW. SECTION II. If the grant is received, staff is directed to bring the selected design to Town Council for approval prior to installation. SECTION III. The Town Manager is authorized to execute any and all documents related to this grant. PASSED this 26th day of November, 2019.
