In the last 10 years, 75% of Georgia’s 159 counties suffered enough flooding to warrant federal disaster declarations. Yet, there are only 91,000 flood insurance policies in effect statewide, which means a lot of Georgians are not adequately protected against flood. Disaster recovery officials want the number of flood policies to go up – a lot. Major flood damage without flood insurance makes recovery harder and costlier. Disaster grants, even when available, are intended to help people start their recovery, not to replace entire households. Flood insurance is available to home, condo and business owners and renters, in communities that, like Tybee, participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). To buy flood insurance, here is what you need to know: • Everyone lives in a flood area. • Most general insurance policies do not cover flood loss. • Flood insurance can be purchased from most licensed insurance agents or through the NFIP. • Policies can cover structure, personal property, or both. • Flood insurance claims are paid regardless of whether there is a state or federal disaster declaration. To find an agent or to learn more about flood insurance, call the NFIP at 888-435-6637 or go online to www.floodsmart.gov. Senior Discounts and Exemptions If you are over 62 and Tybee is your main residence, you qualify for free recycling. If you also have total annual household income below $30,000 in the previous tax year, you may qualify for a lower water rate. Visit City Hall for a copy of the application, or visit the City’s web site and open Downloads > Forms to download the two Senior Citizens’ forms. Return completed forms to City Hall. DPW at Work The DPW has been hard at work around the island. This report is from Joe Wilson as of December 16th: 14th street drainage project is underway with “sheet pilings” being driven this week. T-Grant sidewalk repair/replacement will be half way through this week. DPW crews are demoing 10th street crossover having already completed 6th and 7th street crossovers. City Hall renovations (painting, refinishing floors, curtain cleaning, and re-hanging of past Mayors’ pictures) is complete. Park trees have been pruned and mulched. City Communications Citizens Alert – All local AT&T land-line numbers are now called by an emergency dial-out system if there are emergency warnings considered life-threatening or otherwise dire. Citizens may now visit the City’s web page to click on the Citizen Alert symbol shown below to be taken to a sign-up page. After creating a free account, you can specify what sorts of events you want to hear about through this system, including inclement weather, road closures, traffic delays, power and utility outages, public hearings, special crime bulletins, and beach closings. You will then specify how you want to be contacted: email, cell phone, text messaging, home phone, and work phone are included options. You may also indicate specific addresses you care about, including your home and business, so that localized announcements can also be directed if those addresses are affected. Please be sure to log in and set up your alerts! During an evacuation, we have a toll-free hotline for evacuation and return instructions at (877) 615-3277. The outdoor emergency warning sirens provide verbal information in the event of weather, ocean, or other emergencies.
