Florida’s Profile
The Sunshine State Is In Dire Need Of A Paradigm Shift
Miami-Dade will be at
capacity as soon as 2023,
creating an expensive
problem.
LANDFILLS
In 2008, the House
established a new statewide
recycling goal of 75%to be
achieved by 2020
(Miami-Dade currently at 33%)
STATE MANDATE
According to the EPA, Miami-Dade
residents generate DOUBLE the
national average for waste

Traffic & Infrastructure
It is crucial to understand our strained roads &
bridges are largely affected by a combination of
residential flow, tourism, and events.

Flood Risk
With sea level rise and lengthy wet seasons, we need to
effectively plan the path forward…

Damage from 1 inch of water
equates to $20,000 per home
Geological Composition
Our uniqe porous limestone aquifer
increases the risk of flooding
Aquifer Threats
The Biscayne Aquifer is readily susceptible to
contamination and is the source of water for
over 3 million people
Air & Water Quality
Directly linked to the built environment
& the Heat Island Effect…
Quality
Nearly 1 Million gallons of waste
water are being pumped into the
ground to deep injection wells every
day –right here on Virginia Key.
The Risk is Real
Green House Gases
HIE increases the production of
pullutants such as ozone
Stressed Ecosystems
Water quality decreases as a result of
warmer runoff temperatures
More Expensive
Higher demands for cooling loads lead to
higher utility bills and more emissions
Village Timeline
Over the past decade, the Village has taken significant
steps forward; yet the journey is far from over…
2007
Village Council
formally approves
the Village Goes
Green Initiative (VGGI).
Resident-led green
committee
created in partnership
with local organizations
and 2,013 school
groups.
2008 2013
Mayor Caplan
revitalizes the VGGI
by appointing
the Green Committee,
and the Sustainability
Plan is developed.
2017
Now is the time to
implement the
framework,
and begin the
process of “greening”
the Village.
Key Progress
Local efforts have yielded some impactful results –ensuring our
infrastructure remains functional, efficient and beautiful.

The Next Step
It is time to take responsibility and accountability for the future of the Village
We must create a
Sustainable and
Resilient culture by
devoting resources towards
this task.
Choosing D Squared as a consultant to study,
engineer and report these points is our first step –
providing the Village with an efficient way to
initiate this required competence.
For this to be successful, it is crucial to have a dedicated individual
to cover these issues and oversee the master plan.
First YearDeliverables
To get the ball rolling, we’ll be focusing on
three main target areas during the first year
Improve recycling and waste reduction Village-wide,
and identify future waste management solutions.
Waste Management
Quantify energy usage, implement reduction
measures and offset when and where feasible.
Energy Conservation
Establish incentive criteria & encourage Village-wide
green building for new construction & renovations.
Green Building
How It Works
Utilizing D Squared’s integrated project
delivery platform, knows as 7 FOLD.

01ANALYZE
Perform baseline
analysis to create a
clear picture of existing
conditions and
patterns.
02ENGINEER
Create a custom tailored
“greenprint” that meets the
goals and takes into account
existing conditions
03PROPOSE
Make a formal presentation
regarding the findings, and
recommendations for
moving forward. 04IMPLEMENT
Initiate the integration of
proposed “greenprint” plan
05SERVICE
Ensure the implemented
infrastructure is properly
serviced to maintain
functionality and efficiency.
Reinforce new policy with
strict guidelines, and ensure
that failure to comply results
in a penalty.
07INFORM
Constantly keep the
community engaged with
best practices, access to
services and new
information.
