It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume that a pedestrian is crossing. Speed limit on Butler is 30 MPH. Types of Weather Alerts Statements: provide additional or follow up information to an existing weather condition. Advisories: for less serious conditions that can cause significant inconvenience and could threaten life and/or property. Watches: used when risk of hazardous weather has increased significantly, but occurrence, locations, and/or timing is still uncertain. If you are under a watch, plan where to go for shelter, should the situation deteriorate, especially if outdoors or driving. If already indoors, do not leave seeking other shelter. Warnings: are the most severe/critical alerts; used for conditions posing immediate threat to life or property. Seek shelter or take recommended action immediately. If you are already indoors, do not leave seeking other shelter, unless your shelter is inadequate for the threat or evacuation is ordered. Tybee’s verbal and siren warnings will clearly state type and level of warning being issued. You should also have and use a NOAA All-Hazard Radio. Help Emergency & Utility Staff By law, your address must be marked and easily readable from the street, as well as to keep your water meter uncovered and visible so that human or automated reader systems are able to locate and monitor your water usage. Both these legal requirements benefit yourself and your neighbors. Do not neglect these requirements! HOTEL/MOTEL TAXES DUE BY THE 20TH EACH MONTH If you rent property on Tybee, you must have a business license and collect and pay HOTEL/MOTEL taxes. The owner or property manager is required to collect this tax, 6% of the rental rate, to remit to the City by the 20th each month following the calendar month of the rental. If the taxes are remitted on time, you are allowed to keep 3% of what you collect to offset administrative costs of collection. If taxes are remitted late, you will be assessed late fees, penalties, and interest. Some establishments think they are not required to pay these taxes, but at this time there are no exemptions to the law. Forms for remitting collected taxes can be found on the City’s web, or at City Hall. Stay Off the Sandbars! The tidal currents at the south end’s sandbars can easily be strong enough to knock an adult over and prevent them from regaining their feet. Ocean Rescue risk their safety nearly every day to save people from the sand bars. It’s nearly a mile walk from Tybee to Little Tybee, and the trip cannot be completed even one way before the tide will catch you! Play safe! Tybee Recognized as a Better Hometown The City is pleased to announce the designation of Tybee Island as a Better Hometown Community under the Georgia Main Street Program. Congratulations to Chantel Morton, program Coordinator, to Jonathan Lynn, director of Economic Development, to the Better Hometown Board of Directors, and to Mayor, Council, staff, and volunteers - we all knew already that Tybee is a Better Hometown! No Uncontained Litter on Beach Tybee’s beach litter ordinance states: NO glass allowed on the beach, and all litter must be kept in a container at all times. Even if all your trash is in one place, if it is not contained to prevent it from blowing away, you will be fined $100! DPW removes a minimum of 4 tons of trash from the beach every morning. A typical summer day will result in 10-14 tons of trash. After the July 3rd Fireworks, more than 30 tons of litter will be picked up – consider helping DPW & TBA’s Beach Sweep effort the morning of July 4th. When 15,000 people visit Tybee’s beach, many small bits of litter add up to a major problem. Keep Tybee Tidy - Leave Only Your Footprints!
