Georgia Cities Week – April 13 – 19th, 2014 will include Community Day in Memorial Park on April 17, 2014 from 2 pm to 4 pm Mardi Gras, St. Paddy’s Day, and Seasonal Traffic Begins! Cycling on Butler or Jones is dangerous! If cycling on Tybee, please use the 2nd Ave bike route. If you are driving, keep in mind that cyclists have all the rights of a motor vehicle, and you MUST provide 3’ from the nearest cyclist when passing! You must STOP for any pedestrians crossing or trying to cross at any marked crosswalks. It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume a pedestrian is crossing. Remember, the speed limit on Butler Ave is 30 MPH from the Curve to Tybrisa. Let your out-of-town guests and friends know! Business Registration Fees Due Business Registration forms have been mailed to all businesses registered in 2014. If you are starting a new business, be sure to see Sharon Shaver at City Hall to obtain your business license. All business registration forms and fees must be filed by March 31. Fines will be levied beginning April 1. News from the Tybee YMCA - Skate Night is March 21st 6-9 pm - Registration is now open for youth Soccer, Baseball and Tee-Ball - Ask how you can sponsor a Tybee child for summer camp this summer at the Tybee YMCA. Senior Utility Fee Discounts The City of Tybee Island has a deadline to apply for the Senior Homestead Exemption Water & Sewer Rate by March 31st. To qualify, you must: be age 62 or older; apply for your Tybee home which must be your primary, owned residence; have combined yearly household income under $30,000; provide written proof of income (tax return from previous year); and, apply before the deadline. Applications are available at the City Hall Cashier’s office or under the Forms link on the City website. Discounts for water and trash are provided to qualified homes. Seniors with these same qualifications, though with a maximum of a $25,000 income, can apply for a school tax exemption on Chatham County taxes. This is a COUNTY exemption, so you must contact the office of the Tax Assessor to make your application before March 1st per county requirements. Rain Barrels and Compost Bins at a Discount The City of Savannah and the City of Tybee are offering discounted rain barrels ($65) and compost bins ($62) for a limited time! Get details and place your order at http://www.rainbarrelprogram.org/s avannah. The deadline for orders is March 2. To reduce costs, orders will NOT be shipped directly to you. You must pick items up at Daffin Park near Grayson Stadium on Saturday, March 8, between 8:00 am – noon. A limited number of extras will be available for purchase at the event. Despite the construction under way at the Van Horn Police Station, you can still get in to speak to officers, detectives, and other staff. If the usual doors are inaccessible, please contact the Dispatch desk at 786-5600 to make arrangements to come in an alternate entrance. Of course, continue to call 911 for emergencies!
