Bikes and Peds and Bikes and Peds
Cycling on Butler or Jones is dangerous! Cycling on sidewalks is dangerous and illegal! If cycling on Tybee, please use the 2nd Ave/Van Horn-Cedarwood-Meddin bike routes. If you are
driving, keep in mind that cyclists have all the rights of a motor vehicle, and you MUST provide 3’ from the nearest cyclist when passing! STOP for any pedestrians crossing or trying
to cross at any marked crosswalks. It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume a pedestrian is crossing. Remember, the speed limit on Butler Ave is 30 MPH from
the Curve to Tybrisa. Let your out-of-town guests and friends know!
Summer Movies
Tybee’s Main Street Program will be hosting Summer Movie Nights at Memorial Park the third Saturday of June, July and August. The movie on June 21 will be Disney’s Frozen beginning at
“dark-thirty”. Admission is free.
Road Paving
Paving by Carroll and Carroll will begin on Chatham, 12th street and Veterans Drive on Monday, June 2nd. This project shouldn`t take more than two to three days. Some equipment will
be staged in the 19th and Chatham Parking lots beginning May 28th and 29th.
NEVER Leave Children or Pets in Vehicles Unattended
When parked in the sun, inside your car can be 40-50° hotter than the air outside. Leaving your windows cracked makes very little difference. Even on a pleasant, 70° day, your car will
warm up to 120° or more. On a hot, sunny, summer day, the interior of your car can easily reach 150°! In only 5-10 minutes, your child or pet can die in that kind of heat. Running into
the store for “just a minute” can stretch well beyond those few critical minutes, because you see someone with whom you need to speak, you forgot something, you have an accident, or
the line is a bit longer than expected. Those few minutes can lead to a terrible tragedy – it is never worth it!
Police Department is Open for Business!
Despite construction, which is humming along briskly, at the Police Station, you can still get in to speak to officers, detectives, and staff. If usual doors are inaccessible, please
contact Dispatch, 786-5600, to make other arrangements. Continue to call 911 for emergencies!
New Water & Sewer Lines
From June 5th until Labor Day, various water lines and force mains will be replaced from Chatham up Jones, out to Polk Street area, finishing down Lewis. Traffic will be open each evening,
but may be blocked during the day in each section of the project. A map and estimated dates for each section can be found on the Water and Sewer Department’s web page.
Tybee’s Preservation Efforts Recognized
Thanks to the historic preservation ordinance passed in 1999 and to the ongoing efforts of the Historic Preservation Committee, Tybee has recently been recognized as the 88th “Certified
Local Government” by Georgia DNR’s Historic Preservation Division. Tybee Island is now eligible for federal Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) grants, administered by HPD. HPF grants
may be used for a variety of preservation activities including historic resource surveys, National Register of Historic Places nominations, educational activities, marketing purposes,
publications, heritage tourism studies, and predevelopment plans. To learn more about the CLG program, visit HPD’s website at www.georgiashpo.org/community/clg.
