Driving, Bicycling, Walking on Tybee Cycling on Butler or Jones is dangerous any time of year, but particularly during the tourist season! Cycling on sidewalks is both dangerous and illegal! If cycling on Tybee, please use the 2nd Ave/Van Horn-Cedarwood-Meddin bike routes. If you are driving, keep in mind that cyclists have all the rights of a motor vehicle, and you MUST provide 3’ from the nearest cyclist when passing! STOP for any pedestrians crossing or trying to cross at any marked crosswalks. It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume a pedestrian is crossing. Remember, the speed limit on Butler Ave is 30 MPH from the Curve to Tybrisa. Let your out-of-town guests and friends know! Summer Movies Tybee’s Main Street Program will be hosting Summer Movie Nights at Memorial Park the third Saturday of July and August. July 19th will be Dolphin Tale beginning at “dark-thirty”. (Sun sets at 8:30.) Admission is free. Bring Your Own Bag Week Winner Congratulations to Julia Timms, winner of a night on the town for two. Thanks to all the Tybee restaurants that participated! Even though official Bring Your Own Bag week is over, the BYOB Project and the Community Resources Committee encourages residents and visitors to take reusable bags when shopping, carrying out, and running errands. Don’t Forget To Pay Water Bills on the 20th Each Month! Just a reminder: Accounts that are delinquent are charged a late fee of $15.00 and are subject to disconnect. A cut-off/cut-on service charge of $25.00 is applicable before resumption of service is accomplished. A flat fee of $35.00 shall be charged when service is resumed after hours. NEVER Leave Children or Pets in Vehicles Unattended When parked in the sun, inside your car can be 40-50° hotter than the air outside. Even in a pleasant 70°, your car will be 120° or more. On a hot, sunny day, your car’s interior can easily reach 150°! In only 5-10 minutes, your child or pet can die. For any number of reasons, running into the store for “just a minute” can stretch well beyond those few critical minutes, leading to a terrible tragedy. It is never worth it! Police Department is Open for Business! Despite construction at TIPD, you can still get in to speak to officers, detectives, and staff. If doors are inaccessible, contact Dispatch, 786-5600, for other arrangements. Continue to call 911 for emergencies! New Water & Sewer Lines Through Labor Day, water lines and force mains are being replaced on Jones, Polk, and Lewis. Traffic will be open each evening, but may be blocked during the day. A map and estimated dates for each section is on the City’s web page. Hiring a Contractor Planning & Zoning encourages owners to evaluate quotes carefully before hiring a contractor. Tips for avoiding an unscrupulous contractor include: • Check references. Ask for names of previous customers. Call several and ask if they were satisfied. • Proof of insurance. Reputable contractors carry general liability insurance and workers’ compensation. If they do not, you may be liable for accidents. • Written estimate. Some charge a fee for a written estimate which is then applied to the cost of subsequent work. • Written contract. A contract should state all work to be performed, costs, who obtains permits, and a payment schedule. • Building permit. People are often surprised by the types of projects that require a permit. Call us at (912) 472-5030 for information before the work begins. • Pay by check. A reasonable down payment is 30% of the cost, due upon delivery of materials. • Final payment. Do not make final payment until the work is completed and the building official has passed all inspections. To Address City Council …about agenda items, please speak during public comments. To get on the agenda, file an Agenda Request with the City Clerk by noon, Wednesday, eight days prior to the Meeting! Council meets 2nd & 4th Thursday, 7PM, each month.
