Driving, Bicycling, Walking on Tybee Cycling on Butler or Jones is dangerous any time of year, but particularly during the tourist season! Cycling on sidewalks is both dangerous and illegal by state law! If cycling on Tybee, please use the 2nd Ave/Van Horn – Cedarwood - Meddin bike routes. If you are driving, keep in mind that cyclists have all the rights of a motor vehicle, and you MUST provide 3’ from the nearest cyclist when passing! STOP for any pedestrians crossing or trying to cross at any marked crosswalks. It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume a pedestrian is crossing. Children crossing in the other lane will not be visible behind the stopped car! Remember, the speed limit on Butler Ave is 30 MPH from the Curve to Tybrisa. Let your out-of-town guests and friends know! Summer Movies Tybee’s Main Street Program will be hosting Summer Movie Nights at Memorial Park on the third Saturday of August for the last performance of the summer. August 16th will be Despicable Me 2 beginning at “dark-thirty”. (Sun sets at about 8:00pm.) Admission is free. Girls on the Run Shoe Collection at the Y Drop off your gently worn shoes at the Tybee Island YMCA. Any style or size will work: cleats, heels, sneakers, etc. Shoes can be dropped off in the lobby of the gymnasium. Donations accepted through end of August. Don’t Forget To Pay Water Bills on the 20th Each Month! Just a reminder: Accounts that are delinquent are charged a late fee of $15.00 and are subject to disconnect. A cut-off/cut-on service charge of $25.00 is applicable before resumption of service is accomplished. A flat fee of $35.00 shall be charged when service is resumed after hours. You can pay online by clicking the Pay Online link on the City home page; you should have your most recent statement with your account number and the amount of your last payment to sign up. You can also save yourself some time and hassle by signing up for automatic debit payments and never miss the deadline! Go to Downloads > Forms and choose the Utility Billing Automatic Debit Form. Return the form to City Hall. NEVER Leave Children or Pets in Vehicles Unattended Leaving infants and pets in hot cars has been in the news this summer. When parked in the sun, inside your car can be 40-50° hotter than the air outside. Even in a pleasant 70°, your car will be 120° or more. On a hot, sunny day, your car’s interior can easily reach 150°! In only 5-10 minutes, your child or pet can die. For any number of reasons, running into the store for “just a minute” can stretch well beyond those few critical minutes, leading to a terrible tragedy. It is never worth it! Police Department is Open for Business! Despite construction at TIPD, you can still get in to speak to officers, detectives, and staff. If doors are inaccessible, contact Dispatch, 786-5600, for other arrangements. Continue to call 911 for emergencies! Move in to the new facility is expected to begin in August and be completed quickly! New Water & Sewer Lines Through Labor Day, water lines and force mains are being replaced on Jones, Polk, and Lewis. Traffic will be open each evening, but may be blocked during the day. A map and estimated dates for each section is on the City’s web page. As of July 22nd, status was: July 22nd- Current status: The 8 inch Water Line is laid up to 11th Street. The Water line crew has dropped back to the first section that was chlorinated and tested to tie the residents into the new line, which will be from 17th Street to 14th Street. After they get this completed, they will continue on at 11th Street with laying the new 8 inch water main. The 12 inch Sewer Force Main is completed from Jones Ave. on Solomon Ave. up to the point where they are going to Directional Drill under the Culvert on Solomon Ave, which will be 450 feet of 12 inch pipe pulled under the marsh. Polk Street will be Closed from Fort Street to Laurel Ave. all day Thursday July 24. so they can pull the pipe under the marsh down Solomon Ave. The new pipe will be crossing Polk Street until they get it laid down Solomon; it is all welded together to make one continuous 450 foot run.
