Driving, Bicycling, and Walking on Tybee Cycling on sidewalks is both dangerous and illegal by state law! If cycling on Tybee, please use the 2nd Ave/Van Horn–Cedarwood-Meddin bike routes. If you are driving, keep in mind that cyclists have all the rights and responsibilities of a motor vehicle, and you MUST provide 3’ from the nearest cyclist when passing! STOP for any pedestrians crossing or trying to cross at any marked crosswalks. It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume a pedestrian is crossing. Children in the other lane will not be visible behind a stopped car! Remember, the speed limit on Butler Ave is 30 MPH from the Curve to Tybrisa. Announcing Tybee Island Youth Council Tybee Island Mayor and Council are proud to announce the forming of the Tybee Island Youth Council. All interested 4th and 5th graders enrolled at Tybee Island Maritime Academy or have residence on the Island are eligible to join. The mission of the Youth Council is to promote and receive input from our community’s youth in developing programs that enable them to learn about participatory government; hence to represent their needs. Applications are available at TIMA or at the Clerk’s Office, City Hall. Please direct all questions to Jan LeViner, Clerk of Council, 912.472.5080. Water and Sewer Department Updates The Jones Ave 8 inch water line is now laid up to the middle of 6th & 7th Street on Jones. Laterals service tie-ins to the new water main between 14th & 10th Street on Jones are completed with repairs to road cuts to be completed shortly. The #6 12 inch sewer force main replacement is completed up to the tie in at the #6 Sewer Lift Station as well as the tie in at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Line is being Pressure Tested at this time. The New 12 inch sewer force main should be put on line by the end of October, so that part of the project will be completed. The #7 Sewer Force Main Replacement is still in the design phase as is the new Sludge Digester at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. November 4th is Election Day - Exercise your right to vote! Balloting is back to the Guard House on Van Horn at North Campbell and at the Old School Cafeteria this Election Day. Polling places will be open from 7am to 7pm. In addition to the elections of various representatives and officials, there are ballot initiatives regarding taxation and reckless driving fines. To view a sample ballot in advance of going to vote, visit the Chatham County Board of Elections web site at http://elections.chathamcounty.org/Elections, search for Tybee (Districts 4-10 and 4-11), then click the Sample Ballot number 3 on the far right. (A direct link is on the City’s home page also.) Notify the TIPD if You’ll Be Away for the Holidays Businesses and residents alike should consider notifying the Tybee Island Police Department if you’ll be away for any extended period during the holiday. Additional patrols will be scheduled to check your home or business while you are away. In addition, the department is trying to make sure it has emergency contact information for local businesses in case there are problems outside normal business hours. Please contact the Dispatch desk to inform them of your planned vacations away as well as to make sure they have updated contact information for your business locations on the island. Tybee for the Holidays Activities Tybee for the Holidays activities officially begin Thanksgiving weekend. Small Business Saturday and Community Decorating Day are Saturday, November 29. http://www.tybeefortheholidays is the website for all the holiday season details. To Address City Council …about agenda items, please speak during public comments. To get on the agenda, file an Agenda Request with the City Clerk by noon, Wednesday, eight days prior to the Meeting! Council meets 2nd & 4th Thursday, 7PM, each month. Visit City Hall or our web site to obtain the form. If you are presenting to Council, you must provide your presentation no less than 48 hours in advance to Clerk or IT staff!
