Our Regular Reminder As long as cyclists don’t obey traffic rules or automobiles pass pedestrians trying to use crosswalks, we will continue to remind you about traffic rules. Cycling on Butler or Jones is dangerous! If cycling on Tybee, please use the 2nd Ave bike route. If you cycle, you have all the responsibilities of any vehicle! If you are driving, keep in mind: cyclists have all the rights of a motor vehicle, and you MUST provide 3’ space when passing a cyclist! You must STOP for any pedestrians crossing or trying to cross at any marked crosswalks. It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume a pedestrian is crossing. Remember, the speed limit on Butler Ave is 30 MPH from the Curve to Tybrisa. Let your out-of-town guests and friends know, too! “Adopted Elder” initiative The TIPD is starting an “Adopted Elder” initiative to become guardians of our elderly community, so they feel safe, secure, and not forgotten. We are willing to visit, chat, help with a project, and do most anything with which they would need assistance. If you know of anyone who would benefit, please email Chief Bryson at rbryson@cityoftybee.org or call 912-472-5091. Tybee Recycles! According to Waste Pro, low residential recycling rates seen in February and March were due to several truckloads of contaminated materials being rejected at the recycling facility. Waste Pro has instituted a policy of checking recycling for contamination. Unacceptable items are Styrofoam/polystyrene, plastic bags and film/wrap, yard waste, food scraps, and containers with food left in them. The good news is that rates since July have been much higher than average! Short Term Rentals Must Register and Pay Taxes! The City of Tybee Island is auditing all rental properties for compliance with Ordinances and State laws governing Hotel Motel Tax Collection. If you have a short term rental property on Tybee and are not collecting and paying taxes to the City, please contact Heather Brown at 912-472-5026 or Claire Price at 912-472-5022 for help to get your business license and forms for monthly reporting. Homestead Exemption Applications must be filed each year to be eligible for senior rates on utility bills and exemption from ad valorem taxes on real and personal property. The deadline for filing for Homestead Exemption is April 1, 2015. Individuals qualifying for the Homestead Exemption must, as of January 1, 2015, be 62 years old, have a total combined household income of less than $30,000 for 2014, own a Tybee home, and have legal residency here. Applications are available at City Hall or under the Forms link on the City website. Forms must be submitted with a copy of your 2014 tax return, or, if you do not file, a copy of your year end 2014 Social Security statement. Tybee Y Announces Happy New You!!! No Joiners Fee during the month of January! - Open House & Health Assessments (6th) 9 am- 6:30 pm - Bring a Friend to Gym Week (12th-17th) - Community Game Night (23rd) 6-8 pm - Bring a Friend to Class Week (26th – 31st) Dripping Faucets: An Expensive Way to Protect Pipes in a Freeze A badly dripping faucet can use 1000 GALLONS A DAY, as demonstrated on the automated meter system! That's an extra $6 per day for water and sewer at Tybee's current rates. For just $2, you can buy a foam faucet cover for the faucet. $2 more will buy 6' of foam insulation. $30 buys an electric heating element to wrap around pipes. Save even more by wrapping your pipes with bubble wrap or newspaper and duct tape that you may already have. (Note that Lowe's, Home Depot, and Ace Hardware only stock the foam insulation locally. You can order the electric elements online or special order from your favorite hardware store!) Solarize Tybee Project There has been great interest in the solar photo-voltaic project, and the CRC moving to make it a formal "Solarize" project. An RFP has been issued to select a qualified installer(s) and to guarantee pricing. The deadline for installers to submit bids is January 9. Once an installer is selected mid-January, the official enrollment period will run until March 2. There will be an enrollment link and more information about the program on the City’s web pages. In the meantime, to be kept informed of the process, sign up for notifications using the link for the Solarize Tybee Project on our home page.
