Our Regular Reminder As long as cyclists don’t obey traffic rules or automobiles pass pedestrians in crosswalks, we will continue to remind all: Cycling on Butler or Jones is dangerous! Tybee cyclists, please use the 2nd Ave bike route. Cyclists have all the responsibilities of any vehicle! If you are driving, keep in mind: cyclists have all the rights of a motor vehicle, and you MUST provide 3’ space when passing a cyclist! You must STOP for any pedestrians crossing or trying to cross at any marked crosswalks. It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume a pedestrian is crossing. Remember, the Butler Ave speed limit is 30 MPH from the Curve to Tybrisa. Let out-of-town guests and friends know, too! Important Utility Bill Changes Now Effective March 2015 The following is a summary of changes that will impact Water Utility customers of the City of Tybee Island effective March, 2015. January and February consumption will be billed in the March bill. Both January’s and February’s consumption will be calculated and updated, then the bill mailed with both months due. January’s consumption will show as past due. The bill will be double billed in order to decrease the gap between meter reads and revenue collections and to allow you as a customer to find out how much water was consumed during the previous month much sooner. This is a one-time change and a direct benefit of the new drive-by meter reading system. The utility billing date will change from approximately the 28th to approximately the 5th of each month. The Utility billing due date will change from approximately the 20th of each month to approximately the 25th of the month. Charges become delinquent the day after the due date, but a grace period of 5 days is given before delinquent charges are applied. ACH customers may contact the Utility Billing Department at 912-472-5025 if you need to make any adjustments to turn off the automatic draft for the larger-than-normal amount. Short Term Rentals Must Register and Pay Taxes! The City of Tybee Island is auditing all rental properties for compliance with Hotel Motel Tax Ordinances and State laws. If you have a short term rental property on Tybee and are not collecting and paying taxes to the City, please contact Heather Brown at 912-472-5026 or Claire Price at 912-472-5022 for help to get your business license and forms for monthly reporting. Homestead Exemption Applications must be filed each year to be eligible for senior rates on utility bills and exemption from ad valorem taxes on real and personal property. The deadline for filing for Homestead Exemption is April 1. Individuals qualifying for the Homestead Exemption must, as of January 1, be 62 years old, have a total combined household income of less than $30,000 for 2014, own a Tybee home, and have legal residency here. Applications are available at City Hall or under the Forms link on the City website. Forms must be submitted with a copy of your 2014 tax return, or, if you do not file, a copy of your year end 2014 Social Security statement. DPW Crossover Rebuild Schedule DPW is working in the off-season, as usual, to replace dune crossovers as needed. The 6th Street crossover work will proceed this month until about the 20th, followed by the 7th Street crossover until Mid-March, and the 9th Street crossover in through mid-April. Solarize Tybee Project A Solarize Tybee meeting on Feb. 24, at Savannah Civic Center Grand Ballroom, from 6:30-8:30 pm will inform Chatham County residents of project details. A representative from the Solar Outreach Partnership and the Solarize Tybee installer will be on hand to provide information and answer questions. The project has set up a web site at solarizetybee.org. Sign-ups for the free analysis will be available online as well as on-going details of the effort.
