Our Regular Reminder As long as cyclists don’t obey traffic rules or automobiles continue to pass pedestrians trying to use crosswalks, we will continue to remind you about traffic rules. Cycling on Butler or Jones is dangerous! If cycling on Tybee, please use the 2nd Ave bike route. If you cycle, you have all the responsibilities of any vehicle; bicycles must ride WITH traffic, stay OFF the sidewalk, and STOP at a stop sign! If you are driving, keep in mind: cyclists have all the rights of a motor vehicle, and you MUST provide 3’ of space when passing a cyclist! You must STOP for any pedestrians crossing or trying to cross at any marked crosswalks. It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume a pedestrian is crossing! Remember, the speed limit on Butler Ave is 30 MPH from the Curve to Tybrisa. Let your out-of-town guests and friends know, too! Tybee Fireworks Take Place July 3rd Independence Day celebrations are coming up on the first Friday of the month with the show beginning between 9 and 9:30 PM and lasting about 45 minutes. The show will take place from the usual location on Tybee’s Pier and Pavilion, and be visible from the beaches as well as many places elsewhere on the island. City offices will be closed for the Independence Day holiday. However, DPW and public safety will be working hard to keep residents and visitors safe! Reserved lanes will be set up on Highway 80 to provide access for emergency vehicles if necessary, beginning in the afternoon. Stay out of those emergency lanes! If you plan on driving to the beach, be sure to leave early and don’t plan on getting home quickly! Typical drive times from the south lots to the north end last between one to two hours! If you can ride a bicycle or walk, you’ll have a much better experience! Keep in mind that it was a wandering bottle rocket that set fire to a beach side house a few years ago and destroyed a family home! The sea oats are important to the safety of the island during hurricane season. Fires are never allowed on the beach. Please exercise discretion and extreme caution when using fireworks. Have a safe holiday! DPW to Begin Charging for Dumping DPW is in the final stages of setting up a scale which will be used to charge for filling the Polk Street facility’s dumpsters. Charges will be levied beginning after Council approval and final set-up in mid-July. Only debit and credit cards will be accepted; no cash payments for the service. Residents are encouraged to use their curbside pick-ups whenever possible! You may schedule a special call with WastePro at 843.645.4100 if you have an item or items too large for normal pick-up services. New Number for WastePro WastePro has discontinued their Savannah area local phone number. If you are unable to use the online forms for your waste service issues, please call WastePro directly at 843.645.4100.
