HomeMy Public PortalAbout201510Insert_TybeeRecycling.docx WHAT GOES IN THE BLUE CART?! RECYCLING ON TYBEE Currently, the City of Tybee contracts with WastePro to provide single stream recycling. WastePro takes recycling loads to Pratt Industries in Savannah for processing. With single stream recycling, all of the following materials can go together into the cart: Aluminum and Steel Cans Clear and Colored Glass Bottles and Jars Clean, Unwaxed Cardboard (break down cardboard boxes) Clean Paper Plastics #1 #7 except bags, wrap/film, and Styrofoam Materials should be clean and dry. No food waste! No yard waste! BUT WHAT ABOUT& .? Pratt does not recycle every material/item that displays a recycling symbol. Even though an item may be technically recyclable, if it is not accepted at Pratt, it contaminates our single stream. Don t spoil our loads with wishful recycling! Q: Why can’t I put plastic bags/film or Styrofoam in single stream recycling? A: The bags/film and Styrofoam get torn apart and the tiny pieces get lost in transportation or in the environment. Also, the bags get tangled in the transporting and sorting equipment, which leads to the need for expensive repairs. Q: Can plastic lids be placed on containers or should they be separate? Or does it matter? A: It really does not matter.  For plastic drinking bottles, it is best to put the lids in the bottle or back on the bottle.  If not, the small lids will get lost in the sorting process. Q: Are plastic straws recyclable? A: While some straws are recyclable, they will probably not make it through the complete sorting process.  Straws are lost in transportation and sorting, and get caught up in the sorting equipment. So, don’t put them in the bin. Q: Are Solo cups recyclable? A: Although not accepted at every plant, Solo cups and their equivalents of all colors are accepted at the Savannah recycling plant. Q: Are aerosol cans recyclable? A: Shaving cream, sunscreen, whipping cream, and hair spray cans are acceptable, but cans that contain spray paint or hazardous chemicals aren’t. Q: Can metal lids, like the lid from a pickle jar, go into the bin? A: Yes Q: Are aluminum foil and pie plates OK? A: Yes, if they’re clean and balled up. Q: What other things are not acceptable? A: Any product that has 2 or more types of packaging. For example, sugar bags have a paper outer liner, a poly inner liner, and another paper liner that touches the sugar. Other examples include pet food bags, milk cartons, and juice pouches. Other Tips: If there is more than 5% food waste on the recyclable, toss it in the trash.  Empty all liquid out of plastic bottles. Put smaller recyclables inside large recyclables of the same type, e.g., put a band-aid box inside a cereal box. The bigger cereal box will help the smaller box through the sorting equipment.
