Pedestrian Crossings
State law requires you must stop at any marked intersection, with or without lights, if there is a pedestrian attempting to cross. It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk
– you must assume a pedestrian is crossing. Pedestrians PLEASE cross at marked crosswalks and always operate the lights. After pedestrians have cleared the intersection, vehicles may
proceed without waiting for flashers to stop.
Cycling on Butler or Jones is dangerous! Please use the 2nd Ave bike route. Cyclists have all the responsibilities of vehicles, including stopping at stop signs! Cyclists also have all
the rights of motor vehicles. Drivers MUST provide 3’ clearance when passing a cyclist! Remember, the Butler Ave speed limit is 30 MPH from the Curve to Tybrisa.
Business License Registration/Renewals
All businesses on Tybee must register and pay a business license fee with the business registration clerk, Sharon Shaver, at City Hall, by March 31st. Existing businesses should receive
a renewal notice in the mail. If you have a new business or do not receive registration paperwork for an existing business, please, contact Ms Shaver at 472.5072.
Vacation Rental Homes Must Register and Provide Landline
All rental homes and B&Bs must also register with the business clerk. All short term rentals must provide Hotel/Motel Tax payments to the city each month. In addition, all rental homes
must have a landline to provide geo-location information to dispatch staff if an emergency 911 call is placed from the home. The City Council recently passed an extension to the due
date for land line phones to March 9th, by the Council meeting that night, to accommodate repairs that may still be under way following hurricane Matthew.
Homestead Exemptions
Applications must be filed each year to be eligible for senior rates on utility bills and exemption from ad valorem taxes on real and personal property. The deadline for filing for Homestead
Exemption is April 1. Individuals qualifying for the Homestead Exemption must, as of January 1, be 62 years old, have a total combined household income of less than $30,000 for 2015,
own a Tybee home, and have legal residency here. Applications are available at City Hall or under the Forms link on the City website. Forms must be submitted with a copy of your 2016
tax return, or, if you do not file, a copy of your year-end 2016 Social Security statement.
