Plastic bag recycling locations: Chu’s on Inlet, T.S. Chu’s Department Store, City Hall, Tybee IGA Market, TIPD, & YMCA. Flashing Pedestrian Crossing Lights State law requires you must stop at any marked intersection, with lights or without, if there is a pedestrian attempting to cross. It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume a pedestrian is crossing. Pedestrians PLEASE cross at marked crosswalks and always operate the lights. After pedestrians have cleared the intersection, vehicles may proceed without waiting for flashers to stop. Cycling on Butler or Jones is dangerous! Please use the 2nd Ave bike route. Cyclists have all the responsibilities of vehicles, including stopping at stop signs! Cyclists also have all the rights of motor vehicles. Drivers MUST provide 3’ clearance when passing a cyclist! Remember, the Butler Ave speed limit is 30 MPH from the Curve to Tybrisa. Watch for Children! School begins August 3rd. Watch for children going to and returning from school, and be sure to stop at the cross-walk lights! Events Preview TIPD would like you to know that there will be a drug take back at the YMCA Gym on October 22. Putting pharmaceuticals down the drain damages the environment, as many drugs are not removed by waste treatment systems. Save your expired prescriptions to bring to the drug take back event, after which they will be destroyed safely! Tybee Island Main Street is organizing Tybee Community Day on the afternoon of Sunday, September 18th in Memorial Park. Entertainment, refreshments, and games will help residents celebrate the end of the tourist season. Businesses that wish to participate should contact Chantel Morton at 912.472. Recycling and Waste No need to move your trash bins to the curb; keep waste containers in a visible and accessible location so crews can find them without disturbing your privacy. Waste and recycling will be picked up Monday thru Thursday. All yard trash is picked up on Fridays, island-wide. Yard waste needs to be bundled or placed in paper-only bags for pick-up – no plastic bags! Detailed information about all these changes can be found at our new website; look under the Services menu, and select Waste and Recycling. Please be sure to use the bag recycling locations noted below the above calendar to recycle your plastic bags. Locations have changed! Even though the return on recycled goods has been lower lately, our costs for landfill use and YOUR cost for waste services are still higher if we do not place as much recyclable materials in the recycle bins as possible. As always, Styrofoam and plastic wrap/film/bags are not recyclable. As new glass is now cheaper than recycled glass, virtually no one is recycling glass any longer – place glass in your trash bin, NOT the recycle bin! Please review the Atlantic brochure included with this bill and newsletter, and, please, recycle! Updated Rental Home Requirements All short term rental units must be registered with the City by August 13, 2016 and annually thereafter. Please contact Sharon Shaver at City Hall, 912.472.5072 to register. Additionally, all short term rental units must have a sign listing an emergency contact and phone number that can be seen from outside the building. By January 2017, at the time of renewal, all units must have a landline or 911 phone installed on the property to enable address information to be displayed if someone calls 911 from the home. Cell phone location data is very imprecise, but land line data will display an address, allowing emergency personnel to be dispatched directly to the home. Please contact George Shaw at 472-5031 if you have any questions. To Address City Council …about existing agenda items, please speak during public comments. To get on the agenda, file an Agenda Request with the City Clerk by noon, Wednesday, eight days prior to the Meeting! Council meets 2nd & 4th Thursday, 7PM, each month. Visit City Hall or our web site to obtain the form. If you are presenting to Council, you must provide your presentation no less than 48 hours in advance to Clerk or IT staff!
