In the Wake of Hurricane Matthew
Your City officials are trying to communicate as much as possible about recovery efforts and available assistance due to storm damage from Hurricane Matthew. Information is posted as
soon as it is confirmed on the City’s Facebook page, and is then rolled out to Facebook and Twitter as well. You can get automated notifications via email or text by signing up for
the City’s CivicReady messaging. You can choose what messages you receive and through what methods you receive them. Click to sign up by scrolling to the orange box at http://www.cityoftybee.org.
Details about the following announcments can be find in the News section of that home page.
Late fees and water shut-offs will be suspended for Utility Bill payments until the November 25th due date.
Late fees for hotel-motel taxes will be waived in October and November.
Planning and Zoning is now requiring permits for all the same projects as usual. However, permits for non-structural repairs, like siding or roofing, are being issued at no charge. Similarly,
no permits will be required for damaged, dangerous tree removal. This free period ends on November 20th.
City staff are trying to make arrangements to allow removal of storm debris from private roads. State law requires indemnity agreements be in place for such pick-ups to be completed.
FEMA monies are not allowed to be used to remove debris from private roads. If you live on a private road, stop by City Hall and sign an indemnity agreement to help the project begin
as soon as possible.
The waste transfer station at the DPW yard is accepting white goods, furniture, and construction debris daily, between 8:30 – 11:30 AM. Note: all materials must be weighed to track the
amount taken, although no fees will be assessed for qualifying material; and, yard waste and household garbage cannot be accepted! Continue to place yard waste and cut tree parts curbside
and household waste in your usual trash bin. This program will end on November 10th.
The Small Business Administration has a loan program to assist local small businesses after the storm until July 17, 2017. Visit http://www.sba.gov/disaster.
Chatham County has been declared an Individual Assistance area after the hurricane, making residents available for loans and grants in the right conditions. FEMA representatives continue
to be on the island early in the month. You can also find some details and further resources at https://www.fema.gov/help-after-disaster.
The North Beach parking lot and perhaps the south beach’s 14th Street lot is expected to remain closed at least one week and perhaps two while the debris removal contractor continues
to pick up storm debris from the right of way. If you run out of curb space for your debris, you may bring it to the city right-of-way at JayCee Park. Please sort all your debris into
white goods, furniture, trees and limbs, construction debris, and your regular trash and recycling bins, both at home and if you use the park.
Be sure to make an effort to inspect your home and yard for the smallest areas where water might collect and form breeding grounds for mosquitos. Empty all standing water and keep bird
baths refreshed with clean water on a regular basis. Mosquito larvae can hatch in as little as four days, so you will need to remain vigilant!
Flashing Pedestrian Crossing Lights
State law requires you must stop at any marked intersection, with lights or without, if there is a pedestrian attempting to cross. It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk
– you must assume a pedestrian is crossing. Pedestrians PLEASE cross at marked crosswalks and always operate the lights. After pedestrians have cleared the intersection, vehicles may
proceed without waiting for flashers to stop.
Cycling on Butler or Jones is dangerous! Please use the 2nd Ave bike route. Cyclists have all the responsibilities of vehicles, including stopping at stop signs! Cyclists also have all
the rights of motor vehicles. Drivers MUST provide 3’ clearance when passing a cyclist! Remember, the Butler Ave speed limit is 30 MPH from the Curve to Tybrisa.
