Pedestrian Crossings
State law requires you must stop at any marked intersection, with or without lights, if there is a pedestrian attempting to cross. It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk
– you must assume a pedestrian is crossing. Pedestrians PLEASE cross at marked crosswalks and always operate the lights. After pedestrians have cleared the intersection, vehicles June
proceed without waiting for flashers to stop.
Cycling on Butler or Jones is dangerous! Please use the 2nd Ave bike route. Cyclists have all the responsibilities of vehicles, including stopping at stop signs! Cyclists also have all
the rights of motor vehicles. Drivers MUST provide 3’ clearance when passing a cyclist! Remember, the Butler Ave speed limit is 30 MPH from the Curve to Tybrisa.
Hwy 80 Construction Set to Begin in June, at Last!
Although there has been a delay while the water line project completes along Highway 80, completion of that project is due imminently, with resurfacing of Highway 80 to begin thereafter,
starting at Lazaretto Creek and moving east down First Street then south down Butler Avenue. This delay will likely extend the project past Independence Day, but work during rush hour
and weekends is already excluded from this project, so holiday traffic impact, beyond any safety measures already imposed, should be minimal!
New City Manager Arrives June 5th
George Shaw, interim City Manager these last few weeks, will be happy to be back to having just one job to, running the Planning and Zoning Department. Beginning June 5th, Dr. Shawn
Gillen, formerly the City Manager in Doraville, GA., will start as Tybee Island’s new City Manager, replacing Diane Schleicher. Please join us in welcoming Shawn to the City of Tybee
Island!
