Pedestrian Crossings State law requires you must stop at any marked intersection, with or without lights, if there is a pedestrian attempting to cross. It is illegal to pass a car stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume a pedestrian is crossing. Pedestrians PLEASE cross at marked crosswalks and always operate the lights. After pedestrians have cleared the intersection, vehicles July proceed without waiting for flashers to stop. Cycling on Butler or Jones is dangerous! Please use the 2nd Ave bike route. Cyclists have all the responsibilities of vehicles, including stopping at stop signs! Cyclists also have all the rights of motor vehicles. Drivers MUST provide 3’ clearance when passing a cyclist! Remember, the Butler Ave speed limit is 30 MPH from the Curve to Tybrisa. Independence Day Once again, Independence Day on Tybee will be celebrated on July 4th, with the fireworks set to begin just after dusk from the Pier. Most of the island and hammocks will have an excellent view of the fireworks, but if you attend, we recommend walking or riding your bicycle, as the traffic will be difficult and strained as usual! After the show has ended, you can expect to take as much as two hours or more to move in a vehicle from the south end before departing the island. Traffic disruption has been made radically worse by lane closures in past years, so there will be no lanes reserved for emergency vehicles. Please, no fireworks on the beach to avoid dangers to the dune grasses and homes along the dunes. The tide will be on the way out after 5:40 PM, so you’ll be able to sit anywhere on the beach without worrying about your things washing out to sea! Hwy 80 Construction Set to Begin in July, at Last! The water supply line project has lingered on, keeping the Highway 80 resurfacing project at bay until all the under-the-road work is completed for the water system. The resurfacing is now expected to begin after the July 4th festivities. Introducing Shawn Gillen Shawn Gillen began as our new City Manager at the beginning of June.
