Mayor Jason Buelterman and the City Council has granted most regular city staff the week off. Due to the dates of the holidays this year, this announcement only adds two additional closure days for this week, which should have minimal impact on city services. Public Safety officials will, of course, remain on duty during this time, and Parking Services will continue their 365 days of parking enforcement – don’t forget to look around for the nearest parking kiosk and leave your receipt on your dash board. Please do not drive after drinking! A parking ticket or impaired driving citation will be much worse than a lump of coal in your stocking! City Hall and regularly accessible administrative services will be unavailable as of 5PM, Friday, December 22nd. Offices will reopen following New Years at 8am, Tuesday, January 2nd. Regular waste pick-ups will remain on schedule. For those with utility bills yet unpaid for the month, there is a drop box in front of City Hall, or checks can be mailed to Tybee City Hall; PO Box 2749; Tybee Island, GA 31328. Additionally, bills or citations can be paid online by going to http://www.cityoftybee.org/131/Online-Payments. With a wild bird sanctuary, over three miles of ocean beaches, and salt marshes on the back river, outdoor recreation activities abound for residents and visitors to the island. As a key defense point to the important Savannah port, Tybee’s Fort Screven, Tybee Post Theater, Fort Pulaski, and the Tybee Island and Cockspur Lighthouses combined with the unique architectures of the island’s raised cottages form a rich backdrop for history buffs. Attracting a strong artistic community, there are several local art galleries. Keeping the island interesting year round are several art festivals, community based events and activities, and annual parades and festivals. The Marine Science Center cooperates with Georgia’s DNR to protect threatened sea turtle species by searching for nests, protecting their eggs, and making sure hatchlings make it to sea.
