Develop Bee City initiatives for FY20 Trueblood reviewed that the Bee City USA program only requires the Tree Board read the proclamation and submit a report annually. There is no requirement to complete a certain number of activities. She shared a list of possible ideas for Fiscal Year 2020 and asked the board for ideas. Lewis said the Hillsborough Garden Club plans to create a map of pollinator-friendly gardens as a “pollinator highway” map. She said the plan was to start with the 60-plus garden club members and then expand the map to include the town’s public gardens and containers as well. Logue suggested inviting presenters from the New Hope Audubon Society. Trueblood noted that she lists the Garden Club lectures which are open to the public in the Bee City report and that lecturers from the society have been among the club’s best speakers. Trueblood composed a list of possible activities for FY20 including: • Pollinator highway map (Hillsborough Garden Club) Page 2 of 2 • Ordinance allowing managed natural landscapes and a video about the ordinance • Milkweed plugs giveaway • Pollinator plant pass-along event (Spring 2020) • Designated no-mow area with wildflowers at Churton Street bridge • Reforestation project (climate change initiative) • Bee baths • Gold Park pollinator art panels on the fence • Handmade Parade partnership on pollinator theme • Garden Club articles and lectures • Compost blankets and no-mow slopes • Cates Creek Park rain garden extension • Riverwalk milkweed • Volunteer garden days • Pollinator week activities Board members suggested getting video footage of pollinators on plants this summer as well as a managed natural yard in town for later use in a video. It was also suggested to place a small sign in public managed natural areas to explain the Town of Hillsborough is managing the natural landscape. Trueblood shared that she has two ideas for no-mow areas on public property: on the south side of the Churton Street bridge over the Eno River and on the south side of Eno Street. Trueblood introduced the idea that the Tree Board could decide on a large tree planting initiative to help combat climate change. Trueblood informed the board that the Parks and Recreation Board may consider reducing the size of the mowed grass areas at Cates Creek and Gold parks, so both parks may have future tree planting opportunities. 6.
