HomeMy Public PortalAboutLibrary October Dept. report (2)Monthly Department Report – Library Memo To: City Council From: Meg Lojek, Library Director CC: Anette Spickard, City Manager Date: 10/28/20 Re: Monthly Department Report – October 2020 1. Classes, Workshops, Events: After School Adventures program continues, full to capacity. Outdoor Story Time – last program will be this week, due to the onset of the colder weather. We will work with Chief Williams to determine if it is safe to allow 3-4 kids into an indoor storytime starting in November. Fire Prevention Month – special thanks to the McCall firefighters who came to read stories and sing songs with Miss Bre last week. It was a crowd pleaser in spite of cold weather. Also, special thanks to the city crews for the new library plaza work. This Fire Truck Story Time event was a great way to break in the new library plaza that Parks crew built! Patrons have been loving the new patio furniture as an extra outside public space to read, study, or wait for someone in the library. It is also used frequently as a safe place to play for the After School Adventures program. TutorMobile – our partnership with McCall Parks and Rec, the Library and the Shepherd’s Home continues. We are gathering statistics about usage, increasing technical capability on the bus, gathering learning projects for kids, and communicating with BRMES staff to better serve students. Let’s Walk About It (Idaho Humanities Council grant for outdoor book walks led by local teachers) continued this month with an urban walk from Starbucks to the Skate Park and around the neighborhood. 10 participants discussed A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansbury (1959) and found it particularly applicable to today’s world. We also met with leader Renee Silvus to discuss Big Magic and walked through the State of Idaho’s Endowment lands up off of Warren Wagon Road. A beautiful place to discuss literature and learn from each other. Doing Democracy was postponed this month and instead encouraged participants to go vote. Drive In Movie – library worked together with Golf, Banyans, Shepherd’s Home, Police and community sponsors to offer a Drive-In experience in the clubhouse parking lot. Thanks to Casey Bruck, Diane Penny, and David Gallipoli for extra hours that Friday night. 146 attendees. Monthly Department Report – Library 2. Staff/ Board: Library Board of Trustees member Ed Hershberger has retired and moved, and Patrick Coyle has been appointed to take the open seat. Ed is thanked for many years of service and will be honored in the Library newsletter as a true community leader. Staff are working to complete Teams training and CPR training. Staff is re-evaluating procedures for a safe library experience during COVID19, and considering how to pivot again in the upcoming winter months and with Stage 3. 3. Grants: New grant award from Payette Lakes Progressive Club, plus support from Friends of the Library, makes our Library Book Bike project completely funded. Staff will work with Mia Rider to get the bike prepared for the spring. 4. Library Stats: Attached. 5. Calendar: Please see draft calendar attached for November events.
