SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The Idaho Commission for Libraries offers a Kindergarten Readiness grant to build the capacity of Idaho public libraries to better prepare preschool children to be successful in school.
The grant aims to support library-led, community-based efforts.
McCall Library staff is partnering with Barbara Morgan Elementary, the Idaho Association for the Education of Young Children, and the local Early Learning Advisory Committee to deliver
3 caregiver workshops with dinner and free childcare for the evening, taught by professionally trained librarian and teachers. This grant will also provide library memberships to up
to 10 non-resident families and purchase up to 10 new early learning kits for ongoing checkout at the McCall library.
Success of this grant will ensure more families with pre-kindergarten children have a library card to gain access to the tools and resources needed to help children succeed in school,
especially for families with limited access to preschool programming or who are not regular library users. It will also increase the knowledge of caregivers to incorporate early literacy
activities at home. Finally, it will enhance a cohesive community of parents with young children who aim to support their children as they prepare to enter the elementary schools.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Approve submittal of Idaho Commission for Libraries Kindergarten Readiness Grant application and authorize the Mayor to sign all necessary documents.
