HomeMy Public PortalAbout19871117SCMeetingTybee Island, Georgia November 17, 1987 The Tybee Island City Council held a special meeting on Tuesday, November 17, 1987 at the request of the Tybee Island Optimist Club. The meeting was held in early afternoon so that children from the two schools, Tybee Elementary and St. Michael's, could attend. This meeting was attended by Mayor Walter W. Parkera4 ouncilmembers Walsh, Solomon, Jackson and O'Dell. Two Councilmembers were unable to attend due to their work: Councilmembers Jean Davis and Kilma McCutchen. Former Mayor Charles J. Hosti, speaking for the Tybee Optimists, introduced the program. Mayor Parker welcomed the students and Optimists and explained some of the duties of the Mayor and Council. Each member of Council present was then invited to talk about the committee he chaired. A special discussion of the pier /pavilion project followed with students invited to ask questions and make comments. Mayor Parker then read a Proclamation making November 15 - 21 Optimist Youth Week on Tybee Island. The Proclamation was presented to.the President of the Optimists, Mr. Jim Lynes. Mr. Ted Solomon invited everyone to stay for refreshments following the meeting. Mr. Charles J. Hosti thanked the Mayor and Council for their participation in the youth week program, saying that the interesting discussion of the pier and pavilion fostered the children's involvement in the local government. He thanked everyone who contributed, and the meeting was adjourned. 4 LERK OF COUNCIL P R O C L A M A T I O N WHEREAS, The vast majority of the youth of this community are concerned, knowledgeable and responsible citizens; and WHEREAS, The accomplishments and achievements of these young citizens deserve recognition and the praise of their elders; and WHEREAS, Optimists International has since 1954 developed and promoted a program entitled "YOUTH APPRECIATION WEEK "; and WHEREAS, The citizens of Tybee Island, Georgia, have indicated a desire to join with the Optimists'fn expressing appreciation and approval of the contributions of the youth; NOW THEREFORE, I, WALTER W. PARKER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF TYBEE ISLAND, GEORGIA, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM NOVEMBER 15th THROUGH NOVEMBER 21st AS YOUTH APPRECIATION WEEK ON TYBEE ISLAND, GEORGIA. AND BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED THAT BY THIS ACTION LET IT BE KNOWN THAT WE ADULTS OF TYBEE ISLAND HAVE FAITH IN THE ABILITY OF TODAY'S YOUTH AS THEY ASSUME MORE AND MORE RESPONSIBLE ROLES IN THE FUTURE OF MANKIND.
