HomeMy Public PortalAbout19881116SCMeeting1 1 Tybee Island, Georgia November 16, 1988 The Tybee Island City Council held a special meeting on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 16, 1988 for the Tybee Island Optimists Club annual Youth Council. Charles Moore spoke for the Optimists. Mayor Parker welcomed the audience including former Mayor Hosti and former Councilmember S. J. Orsini. He introduced to the young people the present City Council: Bill Walsh, Jack Youmans, Chris Solomon, Paul Jackson, Jean Davis and John O'Neill. He then spoke briefly of the organization of the city government. Each committee chairman also spoke for a few minutes about the organization of the city departments they head, and their responsibilities as they see them. The audience was asked if there was any particular subject of interest to them that they'd like to have the City Council discuss. The chosen subject was skateboards, and the recently- enacted city ordinance regulating their use. Councilman Walsh, who chaired the committee who studied the skateboard problem, stated that the ordinance is a safety measure, and that the committee included one teenager, one retail merchant who sells skateboards, and the Chief of Police. Councilman Solomon commented on the subject from the point of view of Recreation Chairman, saying that young people have two main areas in which to skate, and that there are hopes that a ramp can be added. He cautioned that safety equipment and supervision would be necessary. A Resolution was read proclaiming November 13th through November 19th as Youth Appreciation Week in Tybee Island, and was presented to Miss Lisa Wall by Mayor Parker. A copy is attached to, and becomes a part of, these minutes. The meeting was adjourned with refreshments, provided by the Optimists.
