There is nothing more exciting than taking the simple actions necessary to make a huge difference by implementing waste reduction techniques and inviting all to participate! Simply pick one and begin! 3 MODELS OF LOW-WASTE EVENT MANAGEMENT Try something new that works! Begin by making a decision to take action, deciding as a group to make garbage management the No.1 priority in your event planning. Decide which model of Low-Waste Event management, Model 1, 2, or 3, you will implement. The No. 2 priority in your event planning is informing the public. Be clear about your Low-Waste Event strategies in all publicity. Model 1: Goal is to end up with clean, sorted recycling, delivering it to our recycling centers and successfully diverting it from our transfer sites and landfills. • Eliminate (or cover) all miscellaneously placed garbage and recycling cans at your event site and determine how many and where your manned garbage station/s will be placed. • Position receptacles in the garbage station and determine how these receptacles will be labeled under your garbage station's canopy. This will depend on how your county manages your solid waste and recycling. So receptacles will be labeled anything from 1-7 plastics, aluminum, tin, cardboard, food waste, and landfill trash. • If your event supplies any reusables (silverware, cups, plates and such), these can also be placed in a receptacle at the garbage station for collection and reuse. Model 2: Goal includes Model 1, and adds involving event organizers and volunteers in assessing and discussing simple ways of reducing garbage/recycling created at your event. • Follow the steps in Model 1. In your event planning, talk about and try to picture what will end up in your garbage cans. ••• Discuss what at this event will be creating garbage/recycling. If this is an event you have held before, the picture will be clear. Take a few moments to make a list of what will end up in your garbage and recycling receptacles. • Please note that if you have tried to recycle at previous events by having recycling receptacles in one area or next to garbage cans this NEVER works. The recycling is always contaminated and ends up at our transfer sites and landfills. Discuss the cost of event garbage management, including dumpster rental fees. Begin to discuss the simple and creative strategies you can use to reduce the amount of garbage/recycling at your event (example: setting up water stations for drinking water instead of providing bottled water and more). Model 3: Goal includes Models 1 and 2, and adds involving all venders as well as the public in your low-waste strategies. Follow the steps in Model 1 and 2. Now, think of all ways to reduce or eliminate what ends up as garbage and recycling. Model 3 involves all event planners and all who attend your event participating in your low-waste effort. If you have food vendors who use Styrofoam, plastic everything, and individually wrapped everything, you can, for example, ask them to omit plastics and use products that are easier on our landfill and/or ask all attending to BYOR (Bring Your Own Reusables). Providing vendors with reusable dishes and silverware also works by adding a dishwashing station. Additionally, Model 3 can become a "pack it in, pack it out" or "leave no trace" event. It's all up to you! Once you become known as a Low-Waste Event, people will participate.
