The North Beach site has some significant
access and imaging challenges due to the
presence of the historic fort walls. While
the center has unprecedented access to the
natural environment of North Beach, the
fort walls effectively isolate the the new
center from visitors entering the cultural
and educational campus.
The single pedestrian access to the site is challenged,
and could be an opportunity to extend the image of the
new center.
%
The un -used parking station does not provide a
compelling image for the vehicular entry into the site.

This map overlay illustrates a preliminary
delineation of the Shore Prot -

June 20, 2012. This line is intended to
assist in locating a proposed structure with
minimal impact to the protective dune
system. The City of Tybee Island's
additional dune line setback of 10 feet is
also illustrated. The delineation appears
to, suggest positioning the structure at the
north end of the existing parking lot.

CAMPUS MASTER PLAN
Tybee Island North Beach
This drawing is the conceptual master
plan developed for the North Beach
Educational and Cultural District during
the design charrette held in June, 2012.
The plan includes the Lighthouse
Complex, the Tybee Island Museum,
the Shrine Club, the North Beach Grill
and the proposed Tybee Island Marine
Science Center. The plan also examines
a reconfiguration of the parking layout
in order to gain efficiency and avoid
loosing any significant capacity for the
development of the new science center.

These diagrams explore the orientation of
the proposed science center as it relates to
view sheds from the Shrine Club, as well as
minimizing the building footprint to
reduce impact to the parking area. By
orienting the building in a, linear fashion
along the northern edge of the Site,
disruption of the view from the Shrine
Club is minimized, while views of the
dune habitat from the science center are
optimized.

Design Analysis: A structure set close to a window
blocks more of the larger view than a structure set
further away. The structure set further away
becomes a part of that some view, blending into the
wider landscape.

A key concept that emerged from the
design charrette for the Tybee Island
Marine Science Center is the creation of
an outdoor theater space that orients
visitors to the vast views of undisturbed
dune habitat enjoyed by the center. This
space could be used for staging educational
programs, orientations for guided tours,
and even for small weddings and other
leasable events.
In addition, when not in use, the theater
serves as a passive space for visitors to take
in the scenery, watch container ships
traveling to and from the port, and take in
local wildlife such as the Painted Bunting,
which is native to this habitat.

The main level of the proposed Tybee
Island Marine Science Center is located
approximately twelve feet above existin6
grade in order to be clear of the flood
plain. It consists of a central lobby flanked
by a series of flexible educational and
gallery spaces linked by an open air
circulation space with broad views of the
undisturbed dune habitat and the ocean
beyond. Support spaces for animal care,
husbandry and other staff activities are
access to the gallery spaces.
An outdoor theater space slopes down
toward the dune landscape and serves as a
venue for educational programs, guided
tours and even small weddings or other
leasable events. The main level contains
approximately 6,000 square feet of
covered habitable space, and multiple
access points to the lower level and to the
beach. A staff entrance is located at the
west end of the building allowing staff
direct access to the service spaces and the
ground level.
