Atwell appeared before the Council in the interest of having Engine #3 equipped with booster brakes, After some discussion, it was moved by Councilman Plaster, duly seconded and carried, that a sum, ,not to exceed $80.00, be voted towards the project. . The following bills were read, approved and ordered paid:- C. C. Saffer & Bro., $10.90 Frye Motor Co., 13.55 Joseph H. Turley, 16.70 Loudoun Times Publishing Co., 15.50 Leesburg Lime & Fuel Corporation,- - - 56.99 Neptune Meter Co., 23.62 Earl L. MAYOR. 4001 i % • RECORDER. • At a regular meeting of the Mayor and Town Council of the town of Leesburg, in Virginia, held in the Council Chahber on April 27, 1936, at 7:30 P. M., there were present, E. N. Bradfield, Mayor; -Roscoe B. Rhoads, Recorder; Herbert Howard, Harry F. Newton, W. Emory Plaster, Louis C. Rollins and Joseph H. Turley, Councilmen. Town Attorney Stilson H. Hall was also in attendance. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Letters of appreciation from Mrs. Roger Dulany Shroy were read, and upon motion of Councilman Plaster, duly seconded and carried the same were or- dered spread upon the minutes. Leesburg, Va., April 20, 1936 • The Mayor and Town Council of Leesburg, Mother and I wish to thank you for the lovely flowers you sent our loved one. We cannot express our deep appreciation for your kind thought of him. Mr. Grant Davis, manager for the Southern States Co-operative, • appeared before the Council and asked permission to replace the old gasoline • tank at their store with a larger one of 4,000 gallons capacity, and upon mo- tion of Councilman Plaster, duly seconded and carried the same was granted. Nightwatchman George Newton was called before the Council and ques- tioned with respect to the condition of the public comfort station. Mr. New- ton explained that it was very difficult to keep the station clean and that it was being used for purposes other than intended; whereupon it was moved by • Councilman Rollins, duly seconded and carried, that it be closed for a period of thirty (30) days, and the Town Sergeant was instructed to do so at once, the supervision of the fencing to be under the direction of the Town Hall com- mittee. Messrs. Frank Ratio and Sanford Wren, of the Leesburg High School, • appeared before the Council and asked permission to use the Town Hall on the night of May 8, 1936, for the purpose of giving a dance for the benefit of the ' Athletic Association of the Leesburg High School. On motion of Councilman Howard, duly seconded and carried, the permission was granted, provided satis- factory arrangements were made with the lessee - Mr. Benj. Pitts. • Mr. S. D. Phillips asked permission of the Council to erect a garage on a lot west of the property of Virdie Robinson, on •East Market Street, and upon motion of Councilman Howard, duly seconded and carried, the same was grant- ed. Mr. F. M. Yellott, Resident Engineer of the Virginia State Highway Department, appeared before the Council, with a report relative to the erection of a new bridge across Town Branch, with money to be provided by the Federal Government. He stated that in order to comply with the requirements of the Highway Department it would be necessary to secure a 42 foot right of way, which ' would project onto the property owners on the west side of King Street, adjacent ; to the approach of the bridge. It was moved by Councilman Plaster, duly second- ed and carried, that a committee be appointed to ascertain if a right of way • could be procured, and report back to the Council. The Mayor appointed Coun- cilmen Rollins and Howard, A telegram from Mr. Edward H. Ruehl, Field Consultant, League of Vir- ginia Municipalities, was read, urging that action be taken with respect to mem- bershtp into the League. On motion of Councilman Plaster,, duly seconded and 21 • • carried, it was ordered that phe request be laid upon the table indefinitely. Mayor Bradfield declared nominations open to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Councilman Roger D. Shroy. Cannelmman Turley placed in nomination the name of Mr. Lawrence S. Hutchison. Councilman Newton seconded the nomination of Mr. Hutchison, and it wasm moved by Councilman Platter, duly seconded and carried, that the nominations be closed, and Mr. Hutchison was unanimously elected to the seat in the Council.
