HomeMy Public PortalAbout1936_07_27 c' , c)eJ At a regular meeting of the Mayor and Town Council of the town of Lees- burg, in Virginia, held in the Council Chamber, in Leesburg, Virginia, on Monday, July 27, 1936, at 8:00 P. M., there were present E. N. Bradfield, Mayor; Roscoe B. Rhoads, Recorder; and Roy M. Flippo, Herbert Howard, Lawrence S. Hutchison, Harry F. Newton, Louis C. Rollins and Joseph H. Turley, Councilmen. The minutes of the last regular meeting and the special meeting of July 14, 1936, were read, corrected and approved as corrected. Miss Louise Harrison, Leesburg, Virginia, appeared before the Council and stated that she was erecting a private school on E. Market Street, Extended, and asked for Pie use of town water, commenting that the consumption would be comparatively small. After some discussion, it was moved by Councilman Rollins, duly seconded and carried, that the matter be laid on the table until the next meeting of Council. Mr. Earl L. Poston, Leesburg, Virginia, representing the Leesburg Base- ball Team, petitioned the Council to hold a Carnival in Leesburg, on the nights of July 29, 30, 31 and August 1, 1936, gratis. On motion of Councilman Howard, duly seconded and carried, the request was granted. Councilman Howard reported that he had met with Mr. Meredith, of the State Board of Health, and had carefully surveyed the situation with respect to the mosquito menace in Leesburg; and that Mr. Meredith would present a written report, in detail, at a very early date, for the consideration of the Council. The matter of closing all open ditches in the corporate limits of the town, by means of sewers, was brought to the attention of the Council, and it was moved by Councilman Rollins, duly seconded and carried, that a committee be ap- pointed to secure estimates of closing all such ditches, and more especially a private sewer from Georsgetown, through the property of Mrs. Maud E. Caviness, to the Town Branch. County Treasurer Howard E. Cole addressed the Council at great length on the subject, after which Mayor Bradfield appointed Councilmen Howard and Rollins as a committee to secure the estimates, etc., and report back to the Council. On motion of Councilman Rollins, duly seconded and carried, the commit- tee recently appointed to have the gutter and curbing repaired from the property of Col. E. E. Garrett onthe south side of West Market Street to the corner of Market andKing Streets, was instructed to have same completed at once. The contract of Mr. G. W. Hume, tenant in the Town Hall property, hav- ing expired on June 30, 1936, and not having been renewed to date, it was moved by Councilman Howard, duly seconded and carried, that the Town Hall Committee, be vested with full power to either renew the contract with Mr. Hume or lease the room to a new tenant. On motion of Councilman Hutchison, duly seconded and carried, the sal- ary of the Nightwatchman was restored to $100.00 per month, effective August 1, 1936. Mayor Bradfield and members of the Council extended a very hearty wel- come to our newly elected Councilman - Roy M. Flippo - and it was hoped that his association would be most helpful to the community. He was appointed to the fol- lowing committees:- Finance, Water and Streets south of Market.
