HomeMy Public PortalAboutr 03:206No. 03-206 Date of Adoption REQUESTING STATEN ISLAND TO CREATE A FLAG/MEMORIAL AT THE FRESH KILLS LANDFILL WHEREAS, the Borough of Carteret ("Borough"), with the assistance of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Green Acres Program, is in the process of constructing a first class waterfront recreational facility along the Borough's border with the Arthur Kill; and WHEREAS Phase I of the waterfront park, which is nearing completion, includes a new 300 foot municipal fishing pier and boat launching ramp; and WHEREAS, Phase II of the waterfront project, which is presently under design, includes the addition of a pedestrian promenade and other passive recreational components along the entire length of the Borough waterfront; and WHEREAS, Phase III of the project envisions the construction of a municipal marina; and WHEREAS, the Borough's Arthur Kill waterfront recreational facility is situated directly across from the Fresh Kills Landfill located in Staten Island; and WHEREAS, a major portion of the debris from the World Trade Center, following its destruction on September 11, 2001 at the hands of merciless terrorists, was brought to the Fresh Kills Landfill for investigation, evaluation, and other purposes; and WHEREAS, during the course of this effort, the remains of victims from the devastating tragedy were also brought to the Landfill facility; and WHEREAS, the families of the victims have been working tirelessly for the establishment of a proper memorial for their loved ones; and WHEREAS, the Borough, which had three residents die in the 9-11 tragedy, strongly supports the efforts of the victims' families to establish an appropriate memorial. WHEREAS, the Borough would like to see the victims and their families honored pending the establishment of a permanent memorial at the site of the former World Trade Center. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Council of the Borough of Carteret as follows: 1. That the Borough hereby respectfully requests that the appropriate New York authorities place a flag along the waterfront at the Fresh Kills Landfill as a memorial for, and in recognition of, the victims of9-11 whose remains are presently located there. ~o 03-206 PAO£ 2 2. That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Governor of the State of New York, the Mayor of the City of New York, New York Department of Sanitation. 3. The Borough hereby respectfully requests that a flag be flown over our Nation's capital in recognition and in memory of the victims of9-11 and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable Congressman Robert Menendez in support of this request.
