HomeMy Public PortalAbout1944_11_13 3 7.6 The Auditor-Treasurer reported that the Pomona pump had been. installed in Well No. 1 and that it was working satisfactory and producing approx- imately 35 G.P.M per minute. Mayor E. N. Bradfield advised Council Mr. D. H. Cooley had cer- tain Police uniforms for sale for the sum of $25 and upon motion of Councilman Rollins and seconded by Council Oliver and unanimously car- ried, the matter of purchasing same was left ij the hands of the Audi- tor-Treasurer. The Mayor read to Council a letter from the Washington & Old Domin- ion Railroad, thanking Council for their resolution passdd at a Special meeting on September 30, 1944. A report on the recent Convention of the League of Virginia Munic- ipalities at Roanoke, Va. was made by Mayor Bradfield, Councilman C . W. Fiske and Auditor-Treasurer Roscoe B. Rhoads-. Councilman J. L. Oliver vdpthe Building Committee , reported that the down spout and gutter at the Pump House was in a deplorable conditimi and that there was need for a gutter at the Disposal Plant. On motion of Councilman Oliver , seconded by Councilman Fiske and unanimously car- ried, the following resolution was adopted: BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the Town of Leesburg, in Virginia that the Auditor-Treasurer be and is hereby directed to have the gutter and downspout -at the Pump House replaced, at a cost not to exceed $65, and also to have a gutter and downspout installed on the Laboratory building at the Disposal Plant. Councilman C. W. Fiske of the Fire Committee reported to Council . that the week of October 8-15* would be observed as Nation Fire Preventimi Week. Upon motion of Councilman Fiske, seconded by Councilman McIntosh, and unanimously carried, the Fire Committee was instructed to inves- togate the matter of skid chains for No. 1 Fire Pumper. Councilman McIntosh of the Finance Committee reported that that there was no fire insurance on the pump house building, garage, disposal plant building, the two town trucks and the fire apparatus . Mayor Bradfield continued the committee and instructed them to procure figures covering said insurance and that he.vmould contact the League of Virgin- ia Municipalities as to custom of same . Ward, Recorder,C.W.Fiske,John T. nourihane, James L. McIntosh Joseph L. Oliver, L.C .Rollins and J.H.Turley Councilmen. The minutes of the last meeting were read and upon motion of councilman J.H.Turley and seconded by councilmen C.W.Fiske, they were apcnihmously approved as read. Fiske and unanimously carried, the following Resolution was _ adopted: BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the Town of Leesburg, in Vir- ginia, that the Auditor-Treasurer be and he is hereby authorized and directed to pay the members of the Leesburg Volunteer Fire De- partment at the rate of $20.00 per annum for the year ending Dec- ember 30, 1944. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Auditor-Treasurer is hereby authorized and directed to deduct any taxes , water rents or other levies from the amount due each Fireman should he owe any such taxes, water rents or other levies. On motion of councilman C.W.Fiske, seconded by councilman Jos . L. Oliver and unanimously carried the following Resolution was adopted: BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the Town of Leesburg, in Vir- ginia, that Roger F. Powell be appointed to the office of Town Sargent (Acting) at the present annual salary of $2,000.00 and that S .C .Bell be employed as Night Watchman for the said town, on the present monthly basis of $139.00 per month. • On motion of councilman C.W.Fiske, seconded by councilman Jas. L. McIntosh and unanimously carried, the following Resolution was adopted: BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the Town of Leesburg, in Vir- ginia,that the Auditor-Treasurer be and he 'is hereby authorized and directed to pay to Mayor E.N.Bradfield the sum of $17.40 as expenses for himself and Audiotr-Treas .Roscoe Rhoads to the' meet- ing of the VPS-VEPCO Committee, held in Richmond, Va. Oct.20,1944. On motion of councilman J .H.Turley, seconded by councilamn C.W. • Fiske,and unanimously carried the following Resolution was adopted: BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the Town of Leesburg, in Vir- ginia ,that the contract between the Twon of Leesburg, in Virginia and Mrs. Grey W. Hume, for the privilege of dumping trash on her property be renewed for the annual rental of $100.00. .0n motion of councilman Joseph L. Oliver, seconded by councilman C.W.Fiske and unanimously carried, the following Resolution was adopted: BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the Town of Leesburg, in Virgas is that the salary of Roscoe B. Rhoads be increased from $2150.00 378 :8 per year to $2300.00 per year; that the salary of Raymond L. Hough be increased from $1600.00 per year to $1700.00 per year, .and that the wages of J. Austin Wright be increased from $25.00 per week to $26.00 per week, N .L. Hardy from $24.00 to $26.00 per week, and T. Everett Athey from $22.00 to $24.00 per week, all said salaries and wages shall be retroactive to November 12 1944. M. McDonald appeared before the Council and asked whether the Town of Leesburg would be willing to turn over to the Fire Department, the entire and complete management of said Fire Department . After some discussion, the matter was referred to the Fire Committee for their consideration and recommendation with instructions to report back at the next meeting of Council. A letter from Mr. T.S.Alexander, asking for an increase of $18.00 per month for hauling garbage , was read to the Council and after discussion of same and upon motion of Councilman C .W.Fiske,
