HomeMy Public PortalAbout1957_06_10 r. 8.8 REGULAR June 10, 1957. • At a regular meeting of the Mayor and Council of the Town of Leesburg in Virginia, held in the Council Chamber at 7:30 P.M., Monday, June 10, 1957, there were present, E. B: White, Mayor, C. R. Hollandsworth, George J. Durfey, H&ward B. Gill, James T. Jackson, Reginald K. Gheen and Mrs: Mae B. Mitchell, Councilmen. Upon Motion by George J. Durfey, seconded by %ward B. Gill, Council- man Reginald K. Gheen was appointed Recorder Pro-tem in the absence of Recorder Horace M. Hallett. The Minutes of the Regular Council Meeting of May 13, 1957 and the Special Meeting of June 3rd were read. Upon motion of Howard B. Gill, Seconded by George J. Durfey the minutes were approved as read: his monthly report for the month of May,1957 and' The Auditor-Treasurer presentedAthe monthly bills, and upon motion of C. R. Hollandsworth, seconded by George J. Gheen, seconded by hrs. Mae B. MitchellAthe following Resolution was adopted: "BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the Town of Leesburg, in Virginia, that the State Auditing Department be and it is hereby requested to audit the records of the Auditor-Treasurer of the Town of Leesburg, concerning the Town's finances for -one year, from July 1, 1956 through June 30, 1957, and the said town will . . pay the Commonwealth of Virginia for making said audit,. and R._K;: Gheen AbtiiE Recorder, is authorized and directed to execute a . certified copy of this resolution to be mailed to the Auditing Department of the Commonwealth of Virginia." With advice and consent of Council, Mayor E. B. White called for a Special Meeting of Council to be held on Monday, June 17, 1957, for the purpose of adopting the Budget for 1957-58 and to fix the -tax rate, and for such other business as might properly come before the meeting. The Town Attorney, Mr. Howard W. Vesey, advised Council that he had considered the bill rendered by Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern, and that it was his opinion that the Town owed the firm nothing. Council directed the Town Attorney to so advise the. firm of Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern. The Council then took up the matter of the letter from Mrs. West concerning attitude of Council regarding the operation of a slaughter-house in Leesburg. Council was informed that Mrs. West was riot proceeding any-further-with-her plans at this time. The Town Attorney suggested that Council give consideration to the adoption of a revised Sanitation Ordinance, including control of Slaughter-Houses, within the town. After discussion Councilmen Durfey and Jackson were requested to work with Mr; Vesey, the Town Attorney, in the drafting of suc/an ordinance. 89 Council discussed the taking of water from Rock Spring and asked.the Town Attorney to draft an agreement in line with the views of Council. Upon motion of Reginald K. Gheen, seconded by C. R. Hollandsworth, a.-4t unaminously carried, Council instructed the Auditor-Treasurer to obtain bids for the construction of-Curb and Sidewalk for the following projects: Sidewalk, 3 ft. wide, and curbing on the North side of E. Royal St. beginning at the corner of King Street, East approximately 236 ft. to existing sidewalk on E. Royal Street, including repair of curb an additional 115 ft., ' ' approximately to Telephone Building property line. 3 ft. sidewalk and curb on West side of Church Street approximately 250 ft. from E. Royal Street to South Street. Repair and construction of sidewalk, 3 ft. wide, on South side of West Loudoun Street, from West side of Alley running between property of G. S. Myers, running west approximately 204 ft. to Fireman's Field, and necessary pipe to cover ditch west of Mitchell property a distance of-approximately 60 ft. to corner of Fireman's Field. 74 M Upon motion duly made, seconded and carried Council adjourned at Ot 9345 P.M. Q • gel . yor ' ordo-tem SPECIAL - JUNE 17, 1957 IIAt a special meeting of the Mayor and Council of the Town of Lees- burg, .in Virginia, held in the Council Chambers on Monday, June 17th, 1957, at 8 :00 o' clock, P. M. there were present, E. B. White, Mayor, Horace M. Hallett , Recorder, George J. Durfey, Reginald K. Gheen, C. R. S Hollandsworth and Mae Bass Mitchell. Upon motion of Reginald K. Gheen, seconded by George J. Durfey and unanimously carried, the following resolution was adopted : -- Whereas, the following proposed budget was presented to Council on May 13, 1957 , and the same was published in a newspaper published in.the Town of Leesburg, and every citizen was given an opportunity to _express his views regarding this budget at a special meeting of the Council of the Town of Leesburg on June 3, 1957, and no objections were made thereto by any citizen of the Town of Leesburg. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Lees- burg, in Virginia, that the said proposed budget be , and the same is hereby adopted.
