SPECIAL MEETING, January 23, 1958
•
_ At a special meeting of the Council of the Town of Leesburg,
in Virginia, held in the Council Chambers on January 23, 1958, at
7:30 P. M. , there were present : George J. Durfey, Mayor ; Howard
B. Gill ; C. R. Hollandsworth; Reed Johnson; Mae Bass Mitchell ;

The Mayor stated that the purpose of this special meeting
was to hear the interested citizens who wanted to voice their ,
views as to the advisability of the recommendation of the Virginia
Department of Highways made on December 21, 1958, that Route No.
7 from the intersection of Loudoun and Market Streets b n the West,
to the intersection of Market and Loudoun Streets on the East, be
made a one-way street going East on Loudoun Street, and a one-way
street West on Market Stredt ; and that if the Town of Lee sburg
would make Route No. 7 a one-way Street, the Virginia Department
of Highways would immediately give consideration to the allocation
of such funds as may be necessary for curb and gutter for a thirty
(30) foot curb to curb width on Route No . 7, and that the Town
would be eligible for said allocation, and that sidewalks would 'ce
constructed on one or both sides •if the Town of Lee sburg provided
•
a sufficient right-of-way for same, and in the installation of
said sidewalks the Town of Leesburg would pay for one-half the •
cost thereof . •
The Town Attorney explained to the meeting the different
aspects of the above referred to proposal . Her advised that the
Resident Engineer of the Department of Highways was present and
would answer questions from the floor . After a lengthy discus
ion
bringing out both the pros and cons of the above referred to re- .
commendation, the Mayor presented two petitions of residents of
the Town of Leesburg, expressing their disapproval of the proposal
plan to make Loudoun and Market Streets one-way streets.
Upon motion of Mrs . Mitchell, seconded by Mr . Gill, and
unanimously carried, the following resolution was adopted:
RESOLVED, That the resolution concerning the proposal to
make Market and Loudoun Streets one-way be read and acted on at
this meeting. .
The Town Attorney read the above referred to r,Asolution, and
upon motion of Mr. Hollandsworth, seconded by Mr . Gill, Gill ,
Mitchell, Hollandsworth and Mayor Durfey voting for, and Johnson,
Semones and Wright voting against, the following resolution was
adopted:

There being no further business to come before the meeting, .
the meeting upon motion duly made and seconded, adjourned.,, • •
