HomeMy Public PortalAbout2013.08.13 PAAC MinutesPublic Art Advisory Committee Minutes August 13, 2013–4:30 p.m. Legion Hall 216 East Park Street, McCall, ID 83638 COMMITTEE MEETING – Began at 4:30 p.m. • CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL Committee members Bob Youde, Claire Remsberg, Cynthia Dittmer and Alison Foudy were present. Also present was Delta James, City Planner. • MINUTES APPROVAL Bob moved to approve the committee minutes of June 5, 2013, as presented. Alison seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. • CHAIR / VICE-CHAIR ELECTIONS Bob moved to elect Claire as committee chair and Alison as vice-chair. Cynthia seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. • PUBLIC ART EXAMPLES Claire shared that she had recently been to Sisters, Oregon, and was impressed by the quilt murals in that community. • PUBLIC ART PROJECT PRIORITIES Staff reported that staff presented the committee’s prioritized ideas for public art within the Urban Renewal District to the district’s board and that board members particularly liked the idea of commissioning unique tree grates within the planned improvements to Fir Street. Staff will follow up with the Urban Renewal District Board in the coming months to confirm funding for public art tree grates. Committee members then brainstormed other possible public art project ideas: o Youth artwork and/or poetry within the bus shelters o Showing public art as part of community web cam(s) o Public art associated with eventual upgrade of breakwater structures near marina • PUBLIC ART EDUCATION / ADVOCACY The committee discussed identified strategies to educate the community about the value of public art, including: o Brochure of existing public art – staff circulated a draft brochure identifying locations of existing public artwork within McCall. Staff will also be working with the City’s GIS Specialist to survey the locations of the artworks for future placement on the online GIS map, Smartphone apps (like the Chamber is developing), etc. The draft brochure is awaiting talking points to be inserted before it is finalized. o Youth curriculum – Alison is working on developing this and asked staff to forward brochure draft for photos and locations. o Film / lectures – Claire is researching possibilities. o Talking points about the value of public art – Barbara was tasked with this item. o Annual report to City Council – will occur in May, 2014. PUBLIC ART ADVISORY COMMITTEE March 20, 2013 Minutes Page 2 • OTHER o Downtown Master Plan update – Staff reminded the committee that the next series of public input workshops for the Downtown Master Plan will be held August 22-23. The consultant team will present ideas for downtown street sections and lakeshore improvements.
