PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Alzheimer' s Disease is one of the most severe
afflictions of the brain, affecting one' s personality,
the ability to remember, make judgements, and function
in society, slowly depriving its victims of the ability
to care for themselves and to respond to those around
them; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer' s Disease affects as many as 66,000 ( 15%) of
older Iowans, yet it is not limited to those over 65,
over half of all people admitted to nursing homes suffer
from Alzheimer' s Disease or a related disorder; and
WHEREAS, A person with Alzheimer' s Disease may live from three to
twenty years or more from the onset of symptoms; and
WHEREAS, Caring for a person with Alzheimer' s Disease may cost
more than $213,000 over the course of the Disease; and
WHEREAS, Iowa is a leading center for investigation into the cause
and care of people with Alzheimer' s Disease, and as our
understanding of the Disease increases, we will be better
equipped to assist Iowa' s families to cope with
Alzheimer' s Disease, diagnose and perhaps some day, cure
and prevent it; and
WHEREAS, Iowans have taken a positive stance towards this
devastating disease by helping victims and families cope
through the five Alzheimer' s Association chapters and the
118 local Alzheimer' s support groups throughout the
state; and
WHEREAS, The Alzheimer' s Association celebrates its sixteenth
Birthday in November, 1996 :
NOW THEREFORE, I, Eldon Hansen, Mayor of Riverdale, Iowa, do hereby
proclaim November 1996, as
ALZHEIMER ' SDISEASE MONTH
