As a full-time citizen who has adopted a section of beach with my husband Brian through the city's program, I firmly believe that the litter that is found on our beach is directly related to the open consumption of alcohol. It is my understanding that the Tybee Island Police Department is in support of this proposal as they deal directly with the effects of alcohol over -consumption by visitors in this area. I know that businesses and restaurants in the area affected by this proposal will be lobbying all of you forcefully to oppose this measure. These are the same businesses who have, for years, stated that most visitors are day trippers who bring their own alcohol in coolers so they should not fear impacts on their business from this ordinance. Perhaps even more visitors (day trippers or short-term renters) will patronize these establishments to have a beverage or two before heading out to the beach. Please move forward with this proposal as it is in the best interests of public safety, full-time residents and families, and out beautiful Tybee beach.
