Subject: Support for new ordinance to limit alcohol use around the Beach
Hello to Madam Mayor and City Council members. We wish to express our STRONG support for the new
ordinance which would restrict the consumption of alcohol in open containers around the beach. We live on
Wilmington Island but spend the majority of our social time on Tybee with friends and visitors who often come
to stay with us (who then spend money as tourists!). There have been times where we have been embarressed by
the behavior of drunks near or on the beach as well as seeing the trash that gets left behind after their pathetic
behavior. Let's face it, some people just don't know how to behave and those same people clearly aren't worried
about the impression that visitors and locals get when they misbehave and mess up the beach. It doesn't seem to
us that this ordinance won't prevent people from drinking, but would protect the beach from the results of
uncontrolled drinking correct?
We would love to continue to be active beach goers and continue to bring our many visitors to Tybee so they
can see why we love Tybee so much. We would love to continue to spend money supporting the economy of
Tybee. We would love our visitors to want to stay and spend their money and not be turned off by the trash and
drunken behavior (then asking to leave and "go someplace else") Please pass this ordinance and show respect
for the beach environment and the people who love Tybee for what it is when it is a true beach community, not
a giant open bar for drunks.
Thanks very much for your consideration!
