We Support Ordinance 2020-21 Alcohol Restrictions. Dear Mayor and City Council Members: We would like to add our support to that of many other residents who are concerned about safety, violence, cleaner beaches, and the well being of our police force and code enforcement staff -- we support the elimination of consumption of alcohol in open containers in designated locations as defined by the ordinance. For all the years we have lived on Tybee, we have heard about alcohol-related problems the police have to deal with. We have personally heard Chief Bryson speak about this for 10 years! We certainly don't need to tell you about the problems. You get the reports. You have heard more than we ever will about domestic violence, the fights, the brawls, and car accidents. The fact that we have so much to "enforce" speaks for itself. The time has come to try a new way! The proposed ordinance is limited in area and in duration. With the strong backing of our local law enforcement officials, it seeks to implement a new approach to solve our island's problem of alcohol abuse by our many visitors. It carefully exempts most of the residential neighborhoods on the island. Most of our residents and visitors during the eight-month test period will be able to continue the responsible consumption of alcohol as they always have in those areas outside the test area. We hope and pray you will support the police department's new approach to this focused test to address the alcohol abuse by certain visitors. We ask you to resist the pressure from those with a strong interest in maintaining the status quo for their own economic gain. Please, give this change a chance. We are counting on you to vote YES. Sincerely and hopefully, Shirley Wright and Dennis Alexander 37 Pulaski Street 1
