Subject: Letter in opposition of ban.
FYI:
Received following from FB Messenger
Good morning. I wanted to write to everyone on the city council but you two are the ones I know personally
but, I hope you'll share my thoughts on the proposed ban with them.
I had intended on attending this evenings council meeting in person but I'll be working. I'm not sure if you
both know that I work at The Sand Bar on Butler. The owner, Jennifer Knox and her mother, Pam are two of
the most generous and responsible people I've ever worked for. Not just to the employees at my bar, but to
everyone. When the virus first became known, they closed before they were forced ic They took down money
that customers left as mementos, or given via donations once the story reached nationwide status, and donated it
to many servers, bartenders and even musicians, from EVERY BAR, here on our island. Tens of Thousands of
dollars they could have used for themselves during this time... they chose to give it away to whomever needed
it.
This ban would severely impact so ;.,:e; :‘ people's livelihoods. I didn't take their generous gift, I was doing ok
so I had them give money allocated for me, to someone who couldn't pay their rent that month. This island has
a miraculous way of coming together and this ban seems to be a way of kicking people when they're down. I
don't believe that an open container ban would do anything other than hurt the businesses that generate a lot of
r_ : ome serving to -go drinks. Now, when many businesses are finally doing a decent business, we are heading
to our slower season, with another peak possible of Coronavirus looming over our heads, This seems like a very
unreasonable thing to even propose at this time.
We have incidents down front from es:::,nsible customers. Places that don't allow open alcohol carry have
the same incidents. People will still be walking own front intoxicated, throwing their trash and attitudes
around... even if they aren't patrons of any of the bars or restaurants. I see them when I leave work constantly
at the vacation rentals, hanging off the balconies and being loud. Most of my customers are family folks that
come with underage children who want a frozen drink to take to the beach. Rowdy people will be rowdy
whether this ban goes into effect or not. You're just forcing them to into the bars while they're drinking.
If you're for this ban, please reconsider what you're doing. Especially right now.
Thank you.
